Powder and concealer — essential tools, but are they safe?
Powder and concealer are the foundations of makeup — the first mattifies and sets, the second hides imperfections. Both products stay in direct contact with the skin for many hours a day, which is why their formulation has a real impact on the condition of your complexion. Talc in powder — is it really dangerous?
Talc (cosmetic talc) is a mineral magnesium silicate that has been a base ingredient in powders for decades. Its ability to absorb excess sebum and give the skin a matte finish is unmatched — but talc has been surrounded by a great deal of controversy.
The controversy: talc and asbestos
Historical concerns about talc were linked to asbestos contamination — talc and asbestos are minerals that occur together in natural deposits. Cases of contamination did happen in the past, leading to lawsuits in the United States. However, cosmetic talc used in the EU is subject to strict regulation — Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 requires cosmetic raw materials to be free of asbestos.
In 2020 the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) confirmed that asbestos-free talc is not classified as carcinogenic to humans. The safety of talc in European cosmetics is overseen by the SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety).
Talc and comedogenicity
The comedogenic potential of talc is rated at 1/5 — that is, very low. Talc itself does not clog pores. Problems can arise when it is combined with other ingredients in the formula (such as oily binders) or with poor hygiene — applying powder with a dirty brush onto skin still covered in sebum residue is asking for clogged pores.
Silica — the modern alternative
Silica (silicon dioxide, SiO₂) is an increasingly popular alternative to talc in powders. It comes in two forms:
- Spherical silica (Silica Microspheres) — round particles that "roll" across the skin, creating a blur effect (softening the appearance of pores and imperfections). This is the main ingredient in popular smoothing primers
- Amorphous silica — absorbs sebum much like talc, but is lighter and does not settle into expression lines
Silica is non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic and does not interact with UV filters. One caveat: in loose powders, fine silica particles can be inhaled — people with respiratory conditions should use pressed powders or apply loose powder with care.
Concealer — a close look at the ingredients
Concealer is a product with a higher concentration of pigments than foundation, applied to specific spots — imperfections, under-eye shadows and discoloration. Because of the thicker layer applied to the skin, a concealer's formulation matters even more than a foundation's.
Key concealer ingredients
- Pigments (CI 77891, CI 77491/77492/77499) — provide coverage and colour. Iron oxides and titanium dioxide are safe and well tolerated
- Emollients (Isododecane, Dimethicone) — give a creamy texture and make blending easier. Isododecane is light and evaporates quickly, which minimises occlusion
- Waxes (Synthetic Beeswax, Candelilla Wax) — stabilise the formula and ensure longevity. They can be occlusive when applied in a thick layer
- Humectants (Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate) — prevent the product from collecting in expression lines and wrinkles
Concealer and the under-eye area
The skin under the eyes is the thinnest on the whole body — about 0.5 mm. Concealers for this area should be light, hydrating and free of irritating ingredients. Avoid concealers with:
- A high alcohol content (Alcohol Denat.) — it degreases and dries out the skin
- Synthetic fragrance blends (Parfum) — they irritate delicate skin
- Acids (Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid) — they serve no therapeutic purpose in a concealer and can cause irritation

Setting spray — what's inside?
Setting sprays are a category we rarely scrutinise for their ingredients — yet it's worth doing, because the product lands all over the face and stays on the skin for many hours.
A typical setting spray contains:
- Denatured alcohol — evaporates quickly, giving that "locked-in" effect. Unfortunately, it dries out the skin with regular use. Look for alcohol-free formulas if you have dry or sensitive skin
- Film-forming polymers (VP/VA Copolymer, Acrylates Copolymer) — create a flexible film over the makeup. Usually safe, but they can cause a feeling of tightness
- Glycerin — hydrates and prevents a "mask-like" makeup effect
- Thermal water / aloe vera — in better formulas, these replace alcohol as the base
How to minimise the negative impact of makeup on your skin?
- Tool hygiene — brushes and sponges are breeding grounds for bacteria. Wash them at least once a week.
- Thorough makeup removal — powder and concealer call for double cleansing (oil + gel) so that no residue is left in the pores.
- Makeup primer — creates a barrier between the skin and colour products, reducing the direct contact of potentially irritating ingredients with the skin.
- Makeup-free breaks — the skin needs time without occlusion. Weekends without full-coverage makeup are good practice.
- Checking the ingredients — read the INCI list before buying, especially if you are prone to acne or allergies.
