Hyaluronic acid — hydration or illusion?
Hyaluronic Acid (and its sodium salt, Sodium Hyaluronate) is probably the most frequently added skincare ingredient in foundations. And rightly so — hyaluronic acid is safe, well tolerated and genuinely binds water in the skin. The question is: does it stand a chance of working within a foundation formula?
The answer is cautiously positive. Low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid (below 50 kDa) can penetrate the epidermis even in a colour formula. High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid forms an occlusive film on the surface that prevents water loss — which is beneficial in a foundation, as it improves wear comfort. The problem arises when hyaluronic acid sits at the end of the INCI list — then its concentration is so low that the hydrating effect is negligible.

Niacinamide — barrier support under makeup
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is an ingredient with a broad spectrum of action: it regulates sebum production, reduces discolouration, strengthens the skin's lipid barrier and has anti-inflammatory properties. In a foundation it can serve a genuine purpose — studies show effectiveness from a concentration of 2%, and colour products often use 1–5%.
For people with oily and combination skin, niacinamide in foundation is good news — it helps control shine and minimises the appearance of pores. It's worth checking, however, whether the formula doesn't also contain large amounts of occlusive silicones, which can cancel out niacinamide's regulating action.
SPF in foundation — how much does it really protect?
This is one of the most controversial topics in cosmetology. Foundations claiming SPF 15, 20 or even 30 suggest sun protection, but there's one catch: to achieve the stated SPF, you need to apply 2 mg of product per cm² of skin. For the face that's about 1.2–1.5 ml — far more than a typical amount of foundation (0.3–0.5 ml).
In practice this means that an SPF 30 foundation applied in a standard amount provides protection at the level of SPF 5–10. The risk of comedogenicity — the dark side of foundations
Regardless of their skincare ingredients, every foundation is an occlusive product — it forms a layer on the skin that can interfere with natural processes. The key question is: does that layer clog pores?
Potentially comedogenic ingredients in foundations include:
- Isopropyl Myristate — an emollient with a high comedogenic potential (4/5)
- Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera Oil) — comedogenic, especially for oily skin
- Ethylhexyl Palmitate — often used as a silicone substitute, but comedogenic

Oily and acne-prone skin
Priority: an oil-free formula with niacinamide and no comedogenic ingredients. Check whether the manufacturer states "non-comedogenic" — but verify the INCI list anyway, because the term isn't legally regulated.
Sensitive skin
Avoid foundations with denatured alcohol (Alcohol Denat.) high on the list, artificial dyes and intense fragrance compositions. Look for formulas with allantoin, panthenol and bisabolol.

- Read the full INCI list — don't rely on the abbreviated claims on the front of the packaging.

- Don't treat the SPF in a foundation as your only sun protection.
