Who's Behind PurScore?

We're not chemists. We're data experts who process the EU's public databases and make them accessible to consumers in an easy-to-understand way.

Our Honest Position

PurScore is not medical advice and not laboratory testing. PurScore is a data aggregator: we collect ingredient information from official, publicly available sources and present it in a searchable, comparable and understandable form.

Concretely, that means:

  • What we can do: read EU regulations, normalize INCI lists, combine databases, build scoring algorithms, create online platforms.
  • What we can't do: make medical diagnoses, give individual advice about your skin type, predict allergies, test ingredients in a lab.

For health questions, allergies or skin concerns, always consult a dermatologist, pharmacist or dietitian. PurScore helps you make an informed choice — the final responsibility rests with you.

OceanSphere Consulting is a one-person company focused on data engineering, online platforms and transparent consumer tools. PurScore is one of several data-driven projects — we also run bf-check.de (accessibility checks under the BFSG), among others.

The planned legal entity for commercial software operations: OceanSphere Service Sp. z o.o. (a Polish limited company, currently being established).

Our Date Sources

We don't make up scores — we aggregate public, verifiable sources:

  • The EU CosIng database — the European Commission's official ingredient database (over 30,000 cosmetic ingredients along with their regulatory status).
  • Open Beauty Facts — a collaborative open-data platform for cosmetics (CC-BY-SA license).
  • Open Food Facts — its food equivalent, featuring Nutri-Score and the NOVA classification (ODbL license).
  • Manual research — we record drugstore and supermarket bestsellers by hand, with their complete INCI lists.

Exactly how we calculate the scores from this data is documented transparently on our Methodology page.

Independence & Funding

PurScore is editorially independent. No manufacturer, brand or store can influence its own score or buy it. Going forward, our revenue comes from affiliate links: if you buy a product from a partner store via PurScore, we receive a small commission. This commission has no influence on how a score is calculated — the algorithm runs fully automatically, based on EU data.

What You Can Expect From Us

  • Transparency: every score is understandable (see Methodology).
  • Source citations: on every product page, we show where the data comes from.
  • Honesty: we don't claim to know more than we do.
  • Date protection: no tracking cookies, no Google Analytics, no profiling.
  • Accessibility: we strive to comply with the BFSG — as the operators of bf-check.de, it's a matter of honor for us.
