Mechanical vs Chemical Exfoliation — What the Ingredients Reveal

Exfoliation — why do you need it?

The skin's natural renewal cycle takes around 28 days — cells form in the basal layer and gradually migrate towards the surface, where they finally shed as dead corneocytes. With age, on dry skin, or under the influence of external factors, this process slows down. The result? Dull, rough skin, blackheads, an uneven tone and reduced absorption of your skincare products.

Exfoliants speed up the removal of dead cells, but they do so in two fundamentally different ways — mechanically and chemically. Understanding the ingredients lets you choose a method that is both safe and effective for your particular skin type.

Mechanical exfoliation — physical buffing

How does it work?

A mechanical exfoliant contains abrasive particles that physically remove dead skin cells through friction. The effect is immediate — skin feels smoother straight away.

Types of abrasive particles in the INCI list

  • Pumice — natural, fairly sharp volcanic particles. Used mainly in foot scrubs.
  • Silica / Hydrated Silica — synthetic silica with a controlled grain shape. Gentler than natural minerals.
  • Sucrose / Sugar — crystalline sugar. It dissolves in water, which reduces the risk of irritation — the longer you massage, the gentler it becomes.
  • Sodium Chloride (salt) — like sugar, it is soluble. More abrasive than sugar.
  • Prunus Armeniaca Seed Powder — apricot kernels, a classic (but controversial) ingredient. The irregular grain shape can cause micro-damage to the skin.
  • Juglans Regia Shell Powder — ground walnut shells. The same concerns apply as with apricot kernels.
  • Oryza Sativa Bran — rice bran. One of the gentler natural abrasives.

The microplastic problem

Until recently, many exfoliants contained Polyethylene (PE) — synthetic plastic microbeads. Since 2023 the European Union has introduced restrictions on microplastics in cosmetics. On the INCI list, watch out for: Polyethylene, Nylon-12, Polymethyl Methacrylate — in bead form, these ingredients are microplastics. It's worth checking them in our ingredient encyclopaedia.

Pros and cons of mechanical exfoliation

Pros: immediate results, easy to use, no waiting time required.

Cons: a risk of micro-injury with overly sharp particles or too much pressure; unsuitable for skin prone to redness, acne or irritation.

Chemical exfoliation — shedding without friction

How does it work?

Chemical exfoliants contain substances that dissolve or weaken the bonds between dead skin cells (desmosomes). The cells fall away on their own, without mechanical friction. The effect builds up gradually and depends on the concentration, the product's pH and the exposure time.

AHAs — alpha-hydroxy acids

Water-soluble, they act on the skin's surface. Ideal for dry, dull and wrinkle-prone skin.

  • Glycolic Acid — the smallest AHA molecule, it penetrates the deepest. Effective, but potentially irritating. Home concentration: 5–10%, professional: 20–70%.
  • Lactic Acid — gentler than glycolic acid and additionally hydrating (a humectant effect). A good starting point for beginners.
  • Mandelic Acid — a large molecule with slow penetration. The mildest of the popular AHAs. Well tolerated by sensitive and redness-prone skin.
  • Tartaric Acid, Citric Acid, Malic Acid — rarely used on their own, more often as components of AHA blends.

BHAs — beta-hydroxy acids

  • Salicylic Acid — oil-soluble, it penetrates inside the pores. Ideal for oily, acne-prone skin with blackheads. Home concentration: 0.5–2%. It also has an anti-inflammatory action.

PHAs — polyhydroxy acids

  • Gluconolactone, Lactobionic Acid — large molecules that act solely on the skin's surface. The gentlest category of exfoliating acids. They hydrate, act as antioxidants and don't increase photosensitivity as strongly as AHAs. Recommended for sensitive, redness-prone skin and after dermatological treatments.

Enzyme peels

Proteolytic enzymes (which break down the protein keratin) work in a similar way to acids, but even more gently and independently of the product's pH:

  • Papain — an enzyme from papaya.
  • Bromelain — an enzyme from pineapple.
  • Subtilisin — a bacterial enzyme used in professional formulas.

Enzyme peels are the most delicate form of exfoliation — suitable even for reactive and acne-prone skin. They work in a short exposure time (5–10 minutes) and require no massaging.

Which exfoliant for which skin type?

Normal skin

Can benefit from both types. Mechanical 1–2x a week, chemical (AHA 5–8%) 2–3x a week. It's best not to combine the two methods on the same day.

Dry skin

Lactic Acid or a PHA. A mechanical exfoliant with sugar (soluble particles) is safe, but shouldn't be used too often.

Oily / acne-prone skin

BHA (salicylic acid) is the gold standard — it cleans pores from within and has an anti-inflammatory action. Avoid aggressive mechanical exfoliants — they can spread bacteria and worsen inflammation.

Sensitive / redness-prone skin

Frequency and safety

  • Mechanical body exfoliants: 1–2x a week.
  • AHA/BHA acids: start with low concentrations, 1–2x a week, then gradually increase the frequency.
  • AHAs increase photosensitivity — after using them, apply SPF for at least 7 days.
  • Don't combine several exfoliation methods at once — over-exfoliating damages the protective barrier.

How to read an exfoliant's ingredients

On the INCI list, pay attention to:

  1. The position of the active ingredient — the higher up, the higher the concentration.
  2. The presence of soothing ingredients (Panthenol, Allantoin, Bisabolol) — a good sign in chemical exfoliants.
  3. The absence of microplastics (Polyethylene, Nylon-12).
  4. The product's pH (if stated) — for AHAs, the effective pH is 3.0–4.0.

Not in the same session. Combining both methods at once increases the risk of irritation and damage to the protective barrier. You can alternate them — for example, mechanical on Monday and chemical on Thursday.

For beginners, the best choice is lactic acid (Lactic Acid) at a 5% concentration or an enzyme peel with papain. Both are gentle, well tolerated and let you gauge your skin's reaction before moving on to stronger substances.

It can, if the abrasive particles have an irregular, sharp shape (e.g. ground kernels or nut shells). Particles with a controlled shape (Silica) or soluble ones (sugar, salt) are safer. Gentle application — without pressing — is also key.

Yes, absolutely. AHA acids increase the skin's photosensitivity for up to 7 days after application. Apply an SPF 30+ sunscreen to exposed areas of the body. BHAs and PHAs increase photosensitivity to a lesser degree, but sun protection is always advisable.
