Why does your choice of cleanser matter?

Cleansing is the foundation of every skincare routine — but the wrong product can do more harm than good. Surfactants that are too harsh damage the hydrolipid barrier, leading to dryness, irritation and, paradoxically, excess sebum production. A cleanser that is too mild, on the other hand, won't effectively remove makeup, UV filters and environmental pollutants.

Cleansing oils

Cleansing oils work on the principle that "like dissolves like" — oils emulsify sebum, waterproof makeup and UV filters without the need for strong surfactants. Once water is added, the oil emulsifies and rinses away, leaving the skin hydrated.

Typical composition and surfactants

The base consists of mineral or plant oils (jojoba, olive, MCT), while emulsification is provided by mild non-ionic surfactants — most often PEG-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate or Polysorbate 80. The detergent strength is minimal, and pH is largely irrelevant here (the product is anhydrous).

Who is it for?

Oils work well for dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin, as well as a first step in removing heavy makeup. Contrary to common concerns, a well-formulated oil does not clog pores, because it emulsifies and rinses away with water.

Face wash gels

Gels are the most popular cleansing category. They have a transparent or slightly cloudy gel-like consistency, foam moderately and effectively remove sebum and light makeup.

Surfactants and pH

The main surfactant is often Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) — gentler than SLS, but still fairly strong. Newer formulas use Cocamidopropyl Betaine or Coco-Glucoside — amphoteric and non-ionic surfactants with a much lower irritation potential. The optimal pH of a gel should fall within the 4.5–6.0 range, close to the skin's natural pH.

Who is it for?

Gels work best for normal, combination and oily skin. People with dry skin should choose gels with amphoteric surfactants and added glycerin — check the composition of your gel to assess whether its surfactants aren't too harsh.

Cleansing foams

Foams are products that either come out of the packaging already as a foam (thanks to a foaming dispenser) or create a rich lather once spread between the hands. They give a feeling of "clean" skin, which isn't always a good thing.

Potential pitfalls

Many foams contain strong anionic surfactants (SLS, SLES, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate), because a dense lather requires intense detergent action. That "squeaky clean" feeling often means the skin's natural lipid film has been stripped away. The pH of foams tends to be elevated (7.0–9.0), which further weakens the epidermal barrier.

Who is it for?

Foams can be suitable for oily skin prone to blackheads — provided they contain mild surfactants and have a pH below 6.0. People with sensitive, atopic or dry skin should avoid them.

Micellar waters

Micellar waters are aqueous solutions containing micelles — tiny surfactant particles that surround and capture impurities. They are applied to a cotton pad and wiped across the face without rinsing.

Benefits and limitations

The biggest advantage is convenience — no contact with water required. The surfactants are usually mild (Poloxamer 184, Hexylene Glycol). The catch is that the surfactants remain on the skin if the product isn't rinsed off. With daily use without rinsing, irritation can build up, especially in people whose skin barrier is already compromised.

Who is it for?

Micellar water works well as a quick makeup removal in the evening or a refresh in the morning. Dermatologically, however, it's recommended to rinse it off with water after use. For sensitive skin, it's worth choosing alcohol-free and fragrance-free variants.

How to match a product to your skin type?

  • Dry/sensitive skin: an oil or a mild gel without SLS/SLES, pH 4.5–5.5.
  • Combination skin: a gel with amphoteric surfactants or an oil as a first step.
  • Oily skin: a gel with moderate detergent strength, pH below 6.0.
  • Quick makeup removal: micellar water, but be sure to rinse it off with water.

What to look for on the INCI list?

  1. Position of the surfactant — the higher on the list, the greater the concentration.
  2. Type of surfactant — anionic ones (SLS, SLES) are the strongest, while amphoteric and non-ionic ones are gentler.
  3. Product pH — optimally 4.5–6.0 (although manufacturers rarely disclose this information).
  4. Presence of soothing ingredients — glycerin, allantoin and panthenol counterbalance the action of surfactants.
