Are Algae Extracts (Iodine) in Cosmetics Safe for Your Thyroid?

Algae in cosmetics and the thyroid: are they safe? We examine iodine levels in algae, skin absorption and the real risk for people with hormonal issues.

Algae in cosmetics — a trendy ingredient with a long history

Marine algae extracts are among the most widely used ingredients in marine, thalassotherapy and detoxifying cosmetics. You'll find them in face masks, moisturisers, anti-ageing serums and body care products. Popular species include Fucus vesiculosus (bladderwrack), Laminaria digitata, Spirulina and Chlorella.

Algae contain polysaccharides (alginates, fucoidan, carrageenans), minerals, vitamins and — the source of so many questions — iodine. Seaweeds have one of the highest iodine contents of any living organism. That raises the question: when you apply a cosmetic containing algae, are you delivering potentially excess iodine to your thyroid?

How much iodine do cosmetic algae extracts actually contain?

The iodine content of algae is variable and depends on the species, the harvesting location and the season. Laminaria japonica can contain up to 8,000 mg of iodine per kilogram of dry matter — amounts that are potentially biologically significant when ingested. In cosmetics, however, the situation is fundamentally different for several reasons:

  • How processed the extract is: The hydrolysis, filtration and standardisation processes used to manufacture cosmetic extracts significantly reduce the content of free iodide ions.
  • Concentration in the product: Algae extract typically makes up only a fraction of a percent of a cosmetic's overall formula.
  • Absorption through the skin: Iodides are hydrophilic (water-soluble) ions that penetrate poorly through the hydrophobic skin barrier (the stratum corneum). On intact skin, their penetration is minimal.

What does the research say about iodine absorption through the skin?

Research into transdermal iodine absorption has focused mainly on iodine preparations used in medicine (tincture of iodine, povidone-iodine) — substances with a free iodine content many times higher than any cosmetic. Even with these products, penetration through intact skin is limited.

A key study published in the European Journal of Endocrinology (Jubiz et al.) found that applying povidone-iodine to the skin over several weeks can raise urinary iodine levels and, in a small number of cases, affect thyroid function — but this involved products with an active iodine concentration on the order of 10%, applied to large skin surfaces (for example, before surgery). Cosmetics containing algae extract operate in a completely different concentration regime.

Who should be especially cautious?

Although the risk to a healthy adult using algae cosmetics is considered minimal, certain groups should approach the topic more carefully:

  • People with autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's): In some patients, excess iodine can aggravate inflammation. Doctors often advise them to limit iodine sources — but they mean diet above all.
  • People taking thyroid medication (thyroxine, anti-thyroid drugs) should discuss any significant changes in iodine exposure with their endocrinologist.
  • Newborns and young children: Their thyroid is more sensitive to iodine disturbances. Using algae cosmetics on infants without medical indication is not recommended.
  • People who apply algae cosmetics to very large areas of the body over a long period (for example, intensive thalassotherapy treatments) — here exposure may be higher.

Legal regulations and safety assessment in the EU

Algae extracts as a class of ingredients are not subject to specific restrictions under EU Regulation 1223/2009, because their use at standard concentrations is assessed as safe. Nor is there a limit on iodine concentration in cosmetics as such — the regulations apply to specific iodine compounds used as preservatives or antibacterial agents.

The SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety) reviews cosmetic ingredients for overall safety, and algae and their extracts do not appear on any restricted list.

Practical tips for consumers

If you have a thyroid condition or take hormone medication, the best strategy is to:

  1. Tell your endocrinologist about any algae cosmetics you use
  2. Avoid applying rich algae products to large areas of skin for many weeks without a break
  3. Choose cosmetics with a clear INCI ingredient list — check the ingredient encyclopaedia to identify algae in a formula

For the vast majority of healthy adults, cosmetics containing algae extracts are safe. The nourishing and moisturising properties of algae polysaccharides are well documented, and the hormonal risk under typical cosmetic use is minimal.

With normal use of masks containing algae extract, the risk of an effect on the thyroid is minimal. The iodine in cosmetic extracts is far less bioavailable than iodine consumed in the diet, and the skin barrier limits its absorption.

There is no outright ban, but people with Hashimoto's should be cautious and consult an endocrinologist. The risk mainly relates to an iodine-rich diet rather than cosmetics; even so, it's worth discussing regular use of algae products on large skin areas with your doctor.

There is no specific limit for iodine naturally present in algae extracts. EU Regulation 1223/2009 does not restrict the use of algae extracts, and the SCCS has not issued a negative opinion on this class of ingredients at typical cosmetic concentrations.
