What is DHA and how does it work in self-tanners?
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA, INCI: Dihydroxyacetone) is a three-carbon sugar — a naturally occurring organic compound — and the key active ingredient in almost all sunless self-tanners. The way DHA works is well understood and quite different from a UV tan: DHA reacts with amino acids and proteins in the outer layers of dead skin cells (the stratum corneum) in a process known as the Maillard reaction, forming brown-coloured melanoidin compounds.
Because the reaction takes place only in the surface, dead cells, DHA does not penetrate into living tissue or reach the bloodstream to any significant degree during normal topical use. This is a fundamental difference from many other active ingredients.
What does the EU Scientific Committee (SCCS) say about the safety of DHA?
The SCCS has issued a detailed opinion on DHA (SCCS/1347/10 and updates). The main conclusions are:
- DHA applied to the surface of the skin (not to mucous membranes, not by inhalation) is considered safe at typical cosmetic concentrations
- EU Regulation 1223/2009 permits DHA as a self-tanner ingredient with no concentration limit for topical application, provided that appropriate precautions are observed
- DHA is not classified as a carcinogen, mutagen or reproductive toxicant when used externally
Where do the safety limits lie?
The safety of DHA has been questioned mainly in connection with two scenarios:
1. Inhaling the aerosol from spray self-tanners
Studies published in Environmental Health Perspectives and elsewhere raised concerns about inhaling DHA in aerosols (sprays, spray-tan booths). Inhaled DHA particles can reach the respiratory tract, where they come into contact with living tissue rather than just dead skin. The FDA (the U.S. Food and Drug Administration) advises caution when using spray self-tanners — in particular, avoiding inhalation and contact with the mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes and nose.
In its opinion, the SCCS states that the safety of DHA in aerosols requires further assessment, which led to a recommendation for precautionary measures with these product forms.
2. Does DHA damage DNA?
Several in vitro studies have shown that DHA can have genotoxic effects in cultured cells. However, in vivo studies (in living organisms) and skin-exposure calculations indicate that the DHA concentrations reaching the living cells of the epidermis during typical topical use are far too low to pose a real risk. The SCCS concluded that the genotoxic risk from topical use is acceptably low.
DHA and photosensitisation — an important practical point
One of the lesser-known but research-confirmed phenomena is the photosensitisation of skin after applying DHA. The Maillard reaction products on the skin's surface can absorb UV radiation and generate free radicals, making the skin more vulnerable to sun damage.
A 2013 study published in Free Radical Biology and Medicine found that skin coated with DHA produces significantly more ROS (reactive oxygen species) under UV exposure than skin without the product. The practical takeaway: after applying a DHA self-tanner, use a sunscreen with SPF — a tan produced by DHA does not protect against UV and does not act as a sunscreen.
How can you use DHA self-tanners safely?
- Avoid using aerosols in enclosed, unventilated spaces — if you use a spray, step outside or open the windows and hold your breath while spraying
- Apply a sunscreen with SPF after every use of a self-tanner — DHA increases the skin's photosensitisation
- Avoid contact with mucous membranes — use protective barrier creams around the eyes, mouth and nose
- Check the expiry date — oxidised DHA is less effective and can produce uneven, patchy colour
