The skin barrier — the stratum corneum — is our body's first line of defence against water loss and external aggressors. When it is damaged, skin becomes dry, reactive and prone to irritation. The two cosmetic ingredients that come up most often in the context of repairing it are ceramides and squalane. Although both work protectively, the way each one acts is fundamentally different.

What are ceramides and how do they work?

Ceramides are structural lipids that make up around 50% of the epidermis's lipid mass. They form a three-dimensional network between corneocytes — the dead surface cells — filling the spaces between them like mortar between bricks. In the "brick and mortar" model, ceramides are an essential component of the mortar.

With age, and under the influence of detergents, cold weather or conditions such as atopic dermatitis, the ceramide content of the epidermis falls. The result is increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Applying ceramides topically — especially Ceramide NP, AP, EOP, NS, AS (INCI naming according to CosIng and EU Regulation 1223/2009) — helps replenish these deficits and gradually normalise barrier function.

Clinical studies show that multilamellar formulas combining ceramides with cholesterol and fatty acids (in a ratio of roughly 3:1:1) are the most effective at rebuilding the natural lipid structure of the epidermis.

What is squalane and how does it work?

Squalane (INCI: Squalane) is a saturated hydrocarbon obtained mainly from olives or sugarcane (the plant-derived version, increasingly common in cosmetics). Chemically it is hydrogenated squalene — a compound naturally present in sebum, the secretion of human sebaceous glands.

Squalane acts as an emollient — it does not replenish structural lipids, but instead forms a thin, breathable layer on the skin's surface that slows the evaporation of water. It is exceptionally lightweight, non-comedogenic and tolerated by the vast majority of skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin.

Unlike ceramides, squalane does not penetrate deep into the structures of the epidermis and does not rebuild the lipid cement. What it does provide is instant relief and softness.

Ceramides vs squalane — the key differences

  • Mechanism: Ceramides replenish the structural deficits of the epidermis; squalane creates an occlusive layer on the surface.
  • Duration of action: The effects of ceramides are long-term (rebuilding the structure); squalane works immediately (hydration and smoothing).
  • Indications: Ceramides are recommended for atopic dermatitis, sensitive skin and after retinoids; squalane suits any skin type as a lightweight emollient.
  • Texture and feel: Ceramides usually appear in creams, balms and lotions; squalane in oils and oil serums — light and fast-absorbing.
  • Stability: Squalane is exceptionally resistant to oxidation; squalene (non-hydrogenated) oxidises quickly — an important distinction when reading labels.

When to choose ceramides?

Ceramides are the priority when skin shows signs of a compromised barrier: tightness, redness, flaking and over-reactivity to cosmetics. They are especially important in cases of atopic dermatitis, skin after aggressive treatments, and mature skin with weakened barrier function. When to choose squalane?

Squalane works well as a daily emollient for anyone seeking lightweight hydration without a greasy feel. It is ideal for oily and combination skin because it does not block pores. It also performs brilliantly as the final step in a multi-stage routine. You will find it in many face creams — it is worth comparing products by the concentration of squalane in the formula.

Can you combine ceramides with squalane?

Yes — and it is actively recommended. Ceramides and squalane work complementarily: ceramides rebuild the lipid cement from within, while squalane seals the surface and prevents water from evaporating.
