A triterpenoid glycoside, the most abundant active compound in centella leaves (making up 25–50% of TECA). An in vitro study published in Planta Medica (2012) showed that madecassoside inhibits the production of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) — two key pro-inflammatory cytokines. In practice this means a strong anti-inflammatory effect that soothes redness, post-acne irritation and erythema.
2. Asiaticoside
The second most abundant glycoside, with an exceptional influence on collagen synthesis.
