Facial cleansing — why does the product you choose matter?
The skin on your face is one of the most exposed areas of the body — constantly hit by pollutants, UV radiation and temperature swings. Daily skincare starts with cleansing, and the product you reach for can either strengthen or weaken the skin's natural hydrolipidic barrier. This barrier is made up of a lipid layer (ceramides, cholesterol, free fatty acids) and natural moisturizing factors (NMF — Natural Moisturizing Factor) within the corneocytes. The difference between a cosmetic gel and a classic bar soap is fundamental — and it comes down mainly to pH and the surfactants used.
Facial bar soap — its history and composition
Classic soap is the product of saponifying fats — a reaction between fatty acids and sodium or potassium hydroxide. This creates fatty acid salts (e.g. Sodium Cocoate, Sodium Olivate), which have a naturally high pH of 9–11. That's a problem, because facial skin has an optimal pH of 4.5–5.5. Contact with an alkaline soap:
- disrupts the skin's microbiome (encouraging the growth of pathogenic bacteria),
- compromises the ceramide layer of the stratum corneum,
- can activate serine proteases responsible for breaking down filaggrin — a protein essential to the hydrolipidic barrier,
- triggers that tight, "stretched" feeling on the skin after washing.
Modern syndets (synthetic detergents) are soap-shaped bars with a balanced pH of 5–7, built on mild amphoteric or non-ionic compounds (e.g. Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate). They aren't classic soap, even though they look like it.
Face wash gel — how is it formulated?
Cosmetic gels are emulsions or aqueous solutions based on surfactant blends with a pH matched to the skin (typically 5.0–6.5). Common ingredients include:
- Mild anionic surfactants: Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate — less aggressive than SLS/SLES,
- Amphoteric surfactants: Cocamidopropyl Betaine — they reduce the irritating effect of anionic surfactants,
- Humectants: Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Betaine,
- pH-buffering ingredients,
- Extracts and active ingredients tailored to your skin type (niacinamide for oily skin, panthenol for sensitive skin).

pH — the key difference
Clinical research confirms that repeatedly disrupting the skin's pH with alkaline products leads to chronic impairment of the epidermal barrier and can aggravate conditions such as atopic dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and rosacea. A gel with a pH of 5–5.5 is far safer in this respect.
Which product for which skin type?
- Oily/combination skin: A cleansing gel with salicylic acid (BHA), niacinamide or zinc. Soap (even syndets) can over-dry the skin, triggering a rebound surge in sebum.
- Dry/normal skin: A creamy gel or a syndet with ceramides and panthenol. Classic soap — not recommended.
- Sensitive/atopic skin: A fragrance- and dye-free syndet at pH 5.5. A gel with Bisabolol or Allantoin. Avoid SLS.
- Acne-prone skin: A gel with BHA (Salicylic Acid) or zinc. Alkaline soap can worsen inflammation.
What to look for — and what to avoid — in the ingredient list
When choosing a gel, check whether it contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) — a strong, potentially irritating anionic surfactant. SLS is permitted under EU Regulation 1223/2009, but the SCCS has noted its potential to irritate with repeated use. Better alternatives include Sodium Coco Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate or betaine-based systems.
With a bar soap, pay attention to its pH (if the manufacturer states it) and the presence of ceramides or oils. For the face, syndets are a better choice than classic alkaline soap.

Is natural soap safer than a gel?
Not necessarily. Cold-process artisan soaps made from plant oils contain natural ingredients, but their pH — as with any saponified soap — sits at 9–11. "Natural" is not a synonym for gentle on facial skin. A gel made with synthetic but well-studied surfactants and a pH of 5.5 is usually kinder to the hydrolipidic barrier than a natural soap bar.
