Every day we face the same choice: reach for a shower gel or a bar of soap? Although the question seems trivial, the answer genuinely matters for the condition of our skin. Both products are designed to remove dirt and sweat, but they do so in entirely different ways, and their composition can have a significant impact on the skin's hydrolipidic barrier.

The fundamental difference: surfactants and pH

The key parameter when assessing any cleansing cosmetic is pH and the type of surfactants used. The physiological pH of the skin is roughly 4.5-5.5. Active ingredients — what's hidden in the formula

  • Glycerin — a humectant that retains moisture in the skin, present in most gels.
  • Panthenol (provitamin B5) — speeds up regeneration of the skin barrier.
  • Plant oils and butters (e.g. shea butter, argan oil) — act as occlusives and provide nourishment.
  • Niacinamide — soothes inflammation and evens out skin tone.

Bar soaps, especially so-called syndet bars (with a pH of around 5.5), increasingly match gels in terms of mildness. It is worth checking whether the label uses the term syndet, or whether the INCI list begins with ingredients such as Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate rather than Sodium Palmate.

Effect on skin microflora

The skin is home to billions of microorganisms that form the skin microbiome. The alkaline pH of bar soap can temporarily upset the balance of this ecosystem, encouraging the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology indicates that even short-term alkalisation of the skin surface alters the ratio between commensal and opportunistic bacteria. Lower-pH shower gels interfere far less with this delicate balance.

Sustainability and packaging

Bar soap wins on carbon footprint and packaging waste — it usually requires no plastic container. Shower gels generate more plastic bottles, although a growing number of brands now offer gels in recycled-plastic packaging, which narrows the gap.

Which is best for which skin type?

  • Dry and atopic skin: Shower gels with a rich moisturising formula or syndet bars are the better choice. Classic alkaline soap can worsen dryness and itching.
  • Oily and acne-prone skin: Both forms can be suitable, provided the formula is non-comedogenic. It is worth consulting the ingredient encyclopaedia to assess comedogenic potential.
  • Normal skin: Free choice — it comes down to sensory preference and practical considerations.
  • Sensitive and reactive skin: Syndet bars or gels with a minimal number of fragrances and preservatives are recommended.

What to look for on the label?

In accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 (the Cosmetics Regulation), all cosmetic ingredients must be listed under their INCI names in descending order of concentration. For cleansing products, it is worth checking the type of surfactant, the presence of preservatives approved by the SCCS (e.g. phenoxyethanol up to 1%), and fragrance substances — fragrance allergens must be listed separately if they exceed 0.01%.
