Why does the choice of shower gel matter?

Washing the body every day is such an obvious ritual that we rarely stop to think about the composition of the product we use. Yet shower gel comes into contact with a large surface of skin for several minutes a day — and over the course of a year, that adds up to hundreds of exposures. A poorly chosen product can lead to dryness, irritation, and even a weakening of the skin's natural hydrolipid barrier.

Surfactants — the heart of every cleansing gel

Surfactants (surface-active agents) are responsible for removing dirt and sebum from the skin. They fall into several categories in terms of cleansing strength and irritation potential.

Strong anionic surfactants

The most commonly used include Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). Both foam excellently and remove grease, but they can disrupt the skin's lipid barrier. SLS is the stronger of the two — SLES undergoes an additional ethoxylation process, which reduces its irritating effect. Gentle surfactants — what to look out for?

If your skin is sensitive or prone to dryness, look for gels based on milder cleansing bases:

  • Coco-Glucoside — a non-ionic surfactant derived from coconut oil and glucose. Very well tolerated, even by atopic skin.
  • Decyl Glucoside — a similar class, gentle and biodegradable.
  • Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) — a syndet surfactant used in "soap-free" bars and gels. It foams well while remaining gentle.
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine — an amphoteric surfactant, often combined with stronger bases to soften their effect.
  • Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate — an amino-acid surfactant with a good mildness profile.

Skin pH vs. the pH of the cleansing product

The skin's natural pH is around 4.5–5.5 (slightly acidic). Traditional soap has a pH in the 9–10 range, which disrupts the skin's acid mantle. Syndets (synthetic detergents) and modern cleansing gels have a pH close to physiological levels — most often 5.0–6.0.

A product with the right pH not only causes less irritation, but also supports the skin's natural defence mechanisms, including the skin microbiome. Dermatological studies clearly confirm that washing with low-pH products reduces the risk of dryness and irritation.

How to check a gel's pH?

Manufacturers rarely list the pH on the packaging. You can measure it yourself with litmus paper, or look for tests in independent reviews. Gels described as "soap-free" or "syndet" generally have a favourable pH.

Washing oils and emulsions — an alternative to the classic gel

People with very dry or atopic skin can reach for shower oils. These contain an oil phase (e.g. soybean, sunflower or almond oil) that forms a delicate emulsion on contact with water. The result? Cleansing without that tight feeling — and even with a touch of added moisture.

On the INCI list of washing oils you'll often find: Paraffinum Liquidum, Glycine Soja Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil combined with a gentle emulsifier such as PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate.

Ingredients worth looking for

  • Glycerin — a humectant that retains moisture in the skin even during washing.
  • Panthenol — soothes and supports the regeneration of the epidermis.
  • Allantoin — has a calming, anti-inflammatory effect.
  • Oat extract (Avena Sativa) — a natural soothing ingredient, recommended for atopic skin.

Potentially irritating ingredients

  • Fragrance compositions (Parfum / Fragrance) — one of the most common contact allergens. In "gentle" gels, their concentration should be minimal or zero.
  • Synthetic dyes (CI + number) — they serve no skincare function and may cause irritation.
  • Denatured alcohol (Alcohol Denat.) — rare in cleansing gels, but drying.

How to choose a shower gel — a practical summary

  1. Check the cleansing base — avoid SLS as the first surfactant. Look for glucosides or SCI.
  2. Make sure the product is labelled "soap-free" or "pH 5.5".
  3. Look for glycerin and panthenol high up on the INCI list.
  4. If you have sensitive skin, choose gels free from artificial dyes and fragrances.
  5. Consider a washing oil if your skin feels tight and dry after bathing.

Remember: no gel can replace moisturising after a bath. Combining gentle cleansing with a good body lotion is the key to healthy, well-hydrated skin.
