The market for intimate wash gels in Poland is growing by 8% a year, yet most consumers choose a product based on its scent rather than its ingredients. The vaginal ecosystem, however, is a delicate balance in which even a small shift in pH can lead to recurring infections. Gynaecologists are sounding the alarm: the wrong intimate gel is one of the most common causes of vaginal dysbiosis in otherwise healthy women.

Vaginal pH — why is it such a crucial parameter?

A healthy vagina maintains a pH between 3.8 and 4.5 — a distinctly acidic environment. This acidity is maintained by bacteria of the Lactobacillus genus (mainly L. crispatus, L. iners and L. jensenii), which ferment the glycogen released by the cells of the vaginal lining and produce lactic acid as well as hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂).

This acidic pH acts as a natural barrier against pathogens — it inhibits the growth of Gardnerella vaginalis (bacterial vaginosis), Candida albicans (thrush) and Trichomonas vaginalis. According to a study published in BMC Infectious Diseases (2018), a rise in pH above 4.5 increases the risk of bacterial vaginosis 3.7-fold.

Why is ordinary soap a poor choice?

Traditional bar soap (pH 9–10), and even a typical liquid soap (pH 6–7), drastically disrupt the acidic vaginal ecosystem. Aggressive surfactants such as SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) further damage the mucous membrane, which in the intimate area is thinner and more sensitive than the skin on your hands. What to look for in the ingredients of an intimate gel

Ingredients to look for

  • Lactic Acid — a natural pH regulator, identical to the one produced by Lactobacillus. It keeps the environment acidic and supports the recovery of the flora.
  • Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate — a lysate of lactic acid bacteria that delivers metabolites supporting the vaginal ecosystem.
  • Bisabolol — a natural anti-inflammatory compound from chamomile that soothes irritation.
  • Allantoin — speeds up regeneration of the epithelium and moisturises the mucous membrane.
  • Panthenol — vitamin B5, which has soothing and moisturising properties.

Ingredients to avoid

  • SLS / SLES — surfactants that are too harsh. Look instead for Cocamidopropyl Betaine or Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate.
  • Parfum (fragrance) — may contain dozens of undeclared allergens. The Polish Gynaecological Society explicitly advises against perfumed intimate gels.
  • CI 42090, CI 17200 (synthetic dyes) — they serve no skincare purpose and increase the risk of irritation.
  • Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) — a preservative with a very high sensitising potential, banned in leave-on products since 2016 but still found in wash gels.
  • Menthol, camphor, essential oils — can cause stinging and irritation of the mucous membrane.

Over-washing — when hygiene becomes the problem

Paradoxically, over-washing the intimate area is a more common problem than insufficient hygiene. Gynaecologist Dr Maria Wilczyńska-Jędrusik from the Centrum Zdrowia Kobiety (Women's Health Centre) stresses that the vagina is a self-cleaning organ — physiological discharge is the natural mechanism for removing shed epithelium and bacteria.

The gynaecological recommendations are clear:

  • Wash the intimate area no more than once or twice a day.
  • Wash only the external area (the vulva) — never inside the vagina (vaginal douching increases the risk of vaginosis by 60%, according to a study in Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2002).
  • After washing, pat the area dry gently rather than rubbing it with a towel.
  • If you have no problems, plain water is enough.

When is an intimate gel really needed?

An intimate wash gel is particularly justified in the following situations:

  • During antibiotic treatment — antibiotics destroy the Lactobacillus flora. A gel with lactic acid helps maintain an acidic pH.
  • During pregnancy — hormonal changes increase glycogen secretion and can encourage thrush. An acidic gel supports the body's natural defences.
  • During the perimenopause — the drop in oestrogen leads to thinning of the epithelium and a rise in pH. A gel with hyaluronic and lactic acid eases the symptoms.
  • With recurring infections — as part of prevention, alongside oral and vaginal probiotics.

How to read the label on an intimate gel

Manufacturers often use phrases like "physiological pH" or "gynaecologically tested", but these terms have no legal definition. "Physiological pH" can mean anything from pH 3.8 to pH 7.0, depending on how the manufacturer interprets it.
