High porosity — what does it mean for your hair?
High-porosity hair has cuticles — the outer protective scales — that are permanently raised or damaged. Picture roof tiles laid unevenly: water and active ingredients penetrate the interior easily, but they escape just as quickly. This leads to a paradox: the hair absorbs moisture in an instant, yet loses it within hours.
High porosity can be inborn (naturally curly hair of type 3C–4C often has raised cuticles), but most often it is acquired — the result of bleaching, repeated coloring, excessive heat styling or unprotected UV exposure. Unlike low porosity, here the hair structure calls for active repair.
How to recognize high-porosity hair?
- Rapid water absorption — the hair gets wet instantly, but also dries quickly (fast moisture loss)
- Frizz — open cuticles react to air humidity, absorbing moisture from the surroundings unevenly
- Tangling and knots — raised scales catch on one another
- Dullness — an uneven surface scatters light instead of reflecting it
- Brittleness — the exposed cortex (the core of the hair) is prone to mechanical damage
- Rapid color fade — pigment washes out through the open cuticles
Hydrolyzed proteins — filling the gaps
Hydrolyzed proteins are proteins broken down into smaller fragments (peptides) with a molecular weight of 500–10,000 Da. This allows them to penetrate the gaps in the cuticle and temporarily fill them in — acting like "fillers" for damaged scales. Check the details in our ingredient encyclopedia.
The most effective types of protein for high-porosity hair:
- Hydrolyzed keratin — the closest match to the hair's natural keratin, it forms a protective film and strengthens the structure. A molecular weight of 400–2000 Da allows for penetration
- Silk proteins (Hydrolyzed Silk) — smooth the hair and add shine while binding moisture. They contain serine — an amino acid with moisturizing properties
- Wheat proteins (Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein) — form a flexible film on the hair's surface, reducing frizz by 20–30% (data from the manufacturer Croda's studies)
- Marine collagen (Hydrolyzed Collagen) — larger molecules (5000–10,000 Da) act mainly on the surface, creating a protective layer

The acidic rinse — closing the cuticle
The pH of healthy hair is 3.67 (Gavazzoni Dias, 2014). Most shampoos have a pH of 5–7, and bleaches reach a pH of 9–11 — which drastically opens the cuticles. An acidic rinse restores a lower pH, causing the scales to contract and close.
The most popular method is the apple cider vinegar rinse (ACV rinse):
- Dilute apple cider vinegar at a ratio of 1:4 (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water) — this gives a pH of about 3.5–4.0
- After washing and conditioning, pour the solution over your hair
- Leave on for 1–2 minutes
- Rinse with cool water
Note: Do not use undiluted vinegar (pH 2.4) — a pH that is too low can damage the hair. Do not exceed a concentration of 1:3. An alternative is citric acid (1 teaspoon per 500 ml of water) or ready-made conditioners with a pH of 3.5–4.5.
Sealing with heavy oils
After moisturizing and closing the cuticle, sealing is key — preventing moisture loss. This is where heavier oils that form an occlusive layer come in:
- Castor oil (Ricinus Communis Seed Oil) — very thick, rich in ricinoleic acid (85–90%). It forms a thick protective layer. It is best applied to the ends and in small amounts, as it weighs hair down heavily
- Avocado oil (Persea Gratissima Oil) — penetrates the hair shaft thanks to its high oleic acid content (about 60%). Rich in vitamins A, D and E. Lighter than castor oil, but still seals well
- Shea butter (Butyrospermum Parkii Butter) — rich in stearic and oleic acid, it forms a semi-occlusive layer. Ideal for the LOC (Liquid-Oil-Cream) method
- Grapeseed oil — a lighter alternative for those who do not tolerate very heavy oils
The LOC/LCO method — layered moisturizing
The most effective care routine for high-porosity hair is to apply products in layers:
- L (Liquid) — water or a light moisturizing mist. This is the base — the moisture you want to seal in
- O (Oil) — a sealing oil (avocado, castor). It creates an occlusive barrier
- C (Cream) — a cream or butter (shea, mango) on top. It adds protection and smoothing
The choice between LOC and LCO depends on hair thickness — finer hair may respond better to LCO (cream before oil), because oil on top does not weigh it down as much as cream does.
What to avoid?
High-porosity hair responds badly to:
- Water-insoluble silicones — paradoxically, although they seal, they make it harder for subsequent rounds of moisture to penetrate. Water-soluble silicones are better (PEG-Modified Dimethicone)
- Drying with hot air — open cuticles lose water even faster on contact with heat. Dry your hair on a cool or cold setting
- Brushing while dry — raised scales catch on one another, leading to pulling and breakage. Detangle wet hair with conditioner, working from the ends upward
