- Glycerin — one of the best humectants. The glycerin molecule (92 Da) is small enough to penetrate the cuticle. The ideal humidity for using it: 40–70% (in a dry climate it can draw moisture out of the hair)
- Honey — a natural humectant containing fructose and glucose. It attracts moisture without weighing the hair down. You can add a spoonful of honey to your conditioner
- Aloe (Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice) — light, moisturising, with a pH of 4.5–5.5, close to the hair's natural pH
- Panthenol (provitamin B5) — penetrates the hair shaft and binds water inside. Effective even at a concentration of 1–2%

- Leave on for 20–30 minutes
- Rinse with cool water — this seals the cuticle with the moisture locked inside
Hair steaming works on the same principle — water vapour at around 45°C opens the cuticle just enough for humectants to penetrate. It's a popular method in salons, but home steamers are available too.
Washing — technique matters
With low porosity, it's worth keeping a few washing rules in mind:
- Wash with warm water — heat (warm, not hot!) opens the cuticle and makes cleansing easier
- Use a clarifying shampoo every 2–4 weeks — it removes accumulated product residue, which builds up faster on low porosity hair
- Avoid water-insoluble silicones — dimethiconol and amodimethicone form a layer that is hard to remove without SLS. If you use them, use a sulphate shampoo from time to time
- Finish with a cool water rinse — it closes the cuticle and adds shine
