Vitamin E is a classic among cosmetic ingredients - you'll find it in creams, serums, oils and lip balms. Yet behind the shared name "vitamin E" lies a whole family of compounds with different properties. Understanding these differences will help you choose cosmetics that better suit your needs.

Tocopherol - the active form of vitamin E

Tocopherol (listed on INCI labels as Tocopherol) is the natural, active form of vitamin E. It exists in four variants: alpha, beta, gamma and delta, with alpha-tocopherol showing the strongest biological activity.

In cosmetics, Tocopherol plays a dual role:

  • An antioxidant for the skin - it neutralises free radicals generated by UV radiation, pollution and natural metabolic processes
  • An antioxidant for the product - it protects other ingredients (especially oils and butters) from oxidation and rancidity, extending the cosmetic's shelf life

Tocopheryl Acetate - stable, but it needs activating

Tocopheryl Acetate (alpha-tocopheryl acetate) is the ester form of vitamin E. It is created by combining tocopherol with acetic acid, which makes it considerably more stable - it doesn't oxidise as easily as pure Tocopherol.

The key difference: Tocopheryl Acetate has no antioxidant action on its own. To become active, it must be converted by the skin's enzymes (esterases) back into free Tocopherol. This process takes place after application to the skin, but its efficiency is not one hundred percent.

That's why Tocopheryl Acetate:

  • Is a better choice in formulations where stability is needed (e.g. creams with UV filters)
  • Does not protect other ingredients in the jar from oxidation
  • Has a slower onset of antioxidant action on the skin
  • Is cheaper and easier to formulate with

Antioxidant action - how does vitamin E protect the skin?

The way vitamin E works is elegantly simple. Free radicals are unstable molecules with an unpaired electron that "attack" healthy cellular structures in order to seize that electron. Tocopherol donates its own electron to the free radical, neutralising it and breaking the chain of oxidative reactions.

In the skin, vitamin E primarily protects:

  • Epidermal lipids - it prevents lipid peroxidation, which weakens the skin barrier
  • Collagen and elastin - it limits oxidative damage in the dermis
  • Cellular DNA - it reduces the risk of mutations triggered by UV radiation

Vitamin E is fat-soluble, which means it integrates perfectly with the epidermis's lipid barrier. That's exactly where it works most effectively - on the front line of defence against external factors.

Synergy with vitamin C - why is this combination so magical?

Combining vitamin E with vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is one of the best-documented duos in cosmetic dermatology. Their teamwork relies on an elegant regeneration mechanism:

  1. Vitamin E neutralises a free radical, becoming a tocopheryl radical itself (the oxidised form)
  2. Vitamin C (water-soluble) regenerates the oxidised vitamin E back into its active form
  3. The restored vitamin E can once again neutralise further free radicals

Studies have shown that combining 15% vitamin C with 1% vitamin E provides four times better protection against UV damage than either vitamin on its own. Adding ferulic acid amplifies this effect even further - the famous C+E+Ferulic combination.

Vitamin E across different product types

Oils and facial oils

Here Tocopherol mainly acts as a stabiliser - it protects plant oils from going rancid. Even small additions (0.1-0.5%) significantly extend a product's shelf life.

Creams and lotions

In emulsions, vitamin E works alongside other antioxidants and emollients. Tocopheryl Acetate is often used here thanks to its better stability in multi-ingredient formulations.

Sun protection products
