Acne and cosmetics — where do the problems come from?
Common acne (acne vulgaris) is one of the most frequent dermatological conditions. It affects not only teenagers — more and more adults struggle with breakouts, blackheads and skin inflammation. Although the causes of acne are complex (genetics, hormones, diet, stress), the composition of the cosmetics you use every day can either worsen or improve the situation.

Comedogenicity — what does it actually mean?
Comedogenicity is the ability of a substance to clog pores and form blackheads (comedones). Back in the 1970s and 1980s, a comedogenicity scale from 0 to 5 was developed, based on tests carried out on rabbit ears. The problem is that:
- Human skin reacts differently than rabbit skin
- The concentration of an ingredient in a product matters enormously
- Interactions between ingredients can change comedogenicity
- Skin reactions are individual — what clogs one person's pores may cause no problems for another

Does „non-comedogenic" on the packaging guarantee anything?
Unfortunately, the term „non-comedogenic" is not legally regulated — neither in the European Union nor in the USA. A manufacturer can put it on the packaging without carrying out any relevant testing. It is a marketing claim, not a certificate. The only reliable approach is to analyze the full INCI list.
Potentially comedogenic ingredients
Some substances tend to be problematic for acne-prone skin more often than others:
- Isopropyl Myristate — an ester often used as an emollient, ranking high on the comedogenicity scale
- Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera Oil) — coconut oil, rich in lauric acid, which can clog pores
- Lanolin — an animal-derived wax, problematic for people with breakout-prone skin
- Myristyl Myristate — an ester used as an emollient, rated 5/5 on the classic scale
- certain occlusive silicones — e.g. Dimethicone in very high concentrations in sensitive individuals
This doesn't mean you have to categorically avoid these ingredients. Concentration, formulation and individual tolerance are decisive.
Proven active ingredients in the fight against acne
Salicylic acid (Salicylic Acid / BHA)
This is the most frequently recommended ingredient in anti-acne cosmetics. As a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) it is oil-soluble, which allows it to penetrate inside the pores and dissolve accumulated sebum. A typical concentration in cosmetics is 0.5–2%. It works as an anti-inflammatory and keratolytic agent — helping to exfoliate dead skin cells and preventing pores from clogging.
Niacinamide (Niacinamide / Vitamin B3)
Niacinamide at a concentration of 2–5% regulates sebum production, strengthens the skin barrier and has an anti-inflammatory effect. It is well tolerated by most skin types and can be combined with most active ingredients. You can read more about it in our guide to active ingredients.
Benzoyl peroxide (Benzoyl Peroxide)
One of the most effective antibacterial ingredients — it kills Cutibacterium acnes bacteria, which play a key role in the development of inflammation. It is available in concentrations of 2.5–10%, although studies indicate that even 2.5% is effective, and higher concentrations don't necessarily deliver better results while more often irritating the skin. Note: benzoyl peroxide can bleach fabrics.
Retinoids (Retinol, Retinal, Adapalene)
Retinoids speed up cell turnover and prevent pores from clogging. Retinol is available in cosmetics, while adapalene is available by prescription or in OTC preparations (depending on the country). Remember to introduce them gradually and use sun protection.
How to build a routine for acne-prone skin?
- Gentle cleansing — a gel or foam with a pH of 4.5–5.5, free of sodium sulfates (SLS)
- An active ingredient — BHA, niacinamide or benzoyl peroxide (not all at once!)
- A lightweight moisturizer — yes, acne-prone skin also needs hydration. Dehydrated skin can increase sebum production

Common mistakes in caring for acne-prone skin
- Over-cleansing — washing your face 3–4 times a day destroys the skin barrier
- Combining too many active ingredients — e.g. BHA + retinol + benzoyl peroxide at the same time
- Avoiding moisturizing — the myth that „oily skin doesn't need a moisturizer" is harmful
- Squeezing breakouts — risk of scarring and further infections
When should you see a dermatologist?
Cosmetics can help with mild acne, but if the lesions are deep, painful, leave scars or don't respond to home care — be sure to consult a dermatologist. A doctor can prescribe prescription medications (e.g. topical antibiotics, adapalene, isotretinoin), which are more effective than over-the-counter products.
