You board a plane in rainy Warsaw, and 10 hours later you step out into the 35°C heat of Bangkok. Your skin has just gone from 60% ambient humidity to 10% (in the cabin), and then to 80% (outside). This thermal and hydration shock is one of the biggest challenges for the lipid barrier — and most people ignore it completely.
The Plane: a desert microclimate at 35,000 feet
A plane cabin is one of the most extreme environments for your skin. The facts:
- Humidity of 10–20% — compared with a comfortable 40–60% on the ground. That's lower than in the Sahara (around 25% on average).
- Reduced pressure — equivalent to an altitude of 1,800–2,400 m above sea level, which affects microcirculation.
- Air recirculation — HEPA filters remove pathogens but add no moisture.
- Exposure time — on a transcontinental flight (8–12 hours) the skin loses up to 30% more water than under normal conditions.
How to protect your skin on a plane?

During the flight:

A tropical destination: when humidity exceeds 70%
From an extremely dry cabin you walk into 70–90% humidity. The skin suddenly takes in excess water from its surroundings — and the humectants in your cream start pulling water from the air instead of from the skin. It sounds perfect, but there's a catch.
Heavy occlusive creams in the tropics are a recipe for trouble:
- Milia — small, enclosed keratin bumps under the skin's surface that form when occlusion is too intense in a humid environment.
- Blackheads and breakouts — thicker formulas clog pores, and sweat and sebum can't evaporate freely.
- Skin fungal infections — heat + moisture + occlusion create the perfect environment for fungi (especially in skin folds).
A tropical routine should be minimalist:
- A gentle cleansing gel (morning and evening).
- A lightweight serum with niacinamide (which regulates sebum).
- SPF 50+ with a light, fluid texture — in the tropics the UV Index reaches 11–12+.
- In the evening: just hyaluronic acid in a gel, or aloe vera — the humid air does the rest.
A cold destination: Scandinavia, the mountains, Arctic frost
Traveling to a cold climate (especially with dry, freezing air) calls for the opposite strategy to the tropics:
- A richer occlusive cream — ceramides, petroleum jelly and shea butter form a barrier against frost and wind.
- No AHA/BHA acids — frost is a stressor for the barrier in itself, and exfoliation will only weaken it further.
- SPF is still mandatory — snow reflects 80% of UV radiation (sand only 15%, water 25%).
- A lip balm with SPF — lips are the weakest spot in the cold.
The travel bag — what to take?
Whatever your destination, your kit should include 5 core products:
- A gentle cleansing gel/milk — universal, for any climate.
- A serum with hyaluronic acid — it works in dry and humid air alike (though the mechanism differs).
- A medium-weight moisturizer — used alone in the tropics, under occlusion in the cold.

Skin acclimatization — how long does it take?
