Skin Discolouration — Which Ingredients Actually Help to Fade It?

What is discolouration and where does it come from?
Skin discolouration (hyperpigmentation) refers to darker patches on the skin caused by excess melanin production. It can have several causes:
- Sun-induced discolouration — the result of cumulative exposure to UV radiation
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — marks left behind by acne, wounds or burns
- Melasma — hormonally driven and notoriously difficult to treat
- Freckles and age spots — genetic and age-related

Ingredients with proven brightening effects
Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid and its derivatives)
Vitamin C is one of the most thoroughly researched brightening ingredients. It works as a tyrosinase inhibitor — blocking the enzyme responsible for melanin production. On top of that, it is a powerful antioxidant and stimulates collagen synthesis.
The most potent form is L-ascorbic acid (Ascorbic Acid) at a concentration of 10–20%, but it is unstable and can cause irritation. More stable derivatives include:
- Ascorbyl Glucoside — stable and gentle, but penetrates less effectively
- Ethyl Ascorbic Acid — good penetration, stability and efficacy
- Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate — water-soluble and well tolerated
Results become visible after 8–12 weeks of consistent use.
Arbutin — alpha vs beta
Arbutin is a natural glycoside of hydroquinone, sourced for example from bearberry leaves. It inhibits tyrosinase but is far gentler than hydroquinone itself.

Azelaic acid (Azelaic Acid)
Azelaic acid at a concentration of 15–20% is effective against both discolouration and acne. It acts selectively — inhibiting overactive melanocytes while leaving normally functioning ones untouched. This makes it safe for all skin phototypes, including darker complexions.
An added benefit: it has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. At higher concentrations (15–20%) it is available on prescription, while lower concentrations (up to 10%) are used in cosmetics.
Kojic acid (Kojic Acid)
Derived from rice fermentation, kojic acid inhibits tyrosinase by chelating copper — an ion essential for the enzyme to function. It is used at concentrations of 1–4%. It can be unstable and may cause sensitisation, which is why it is often combined with other brightening ingredients for a synergistic effect.
Tranexamic acid (Tranexamic Acid)
A relatively new player in skincare, but with promising study results, particularly when it comes to melasma. Tranexamic acid acts at a different stage of the melanogenesis pathway — inhibiting the interaction between keratinocytes and melanocytes. Applied topically at a concentration of 2–5%, it is well tolerated and can be combined with other brightening ingredients.
Realistic expectations — how long does fading take?
This is a key point that many manufacturers fail to state openly. Fading discolouration is a process that takes weeks and months, not days.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — typically 3–6 months with consistent use of active ingredients + SPF
- Sun spots — 6–12 months, depending on how deep they are
- Melasma — the hardest to treat, often requiring a combination of ingredients and dermatological care, and prone to recurrence
Patience and consistency are essential. No cream will erase deep discolouration in a week — if a manufacturer promises this, treat such claims with great caution.
SPF — the foundation of every brightening routine
Let us say it clearly: without daily use of an SPF 30+ filter (ideally SPF 50), no brightening ingredient will be fully effective. UV radiation stimulates melanocytes to produce melanin, undoing the results of your skincare. Sunscreen should be worn even on cloudy days and in winter.
How to combine brightening ingredients?
Many ingredients work synergistically:
- Vitamin C + ferulic acid + vitamin E — a classic stabilising and reinforcing combination
- Niacinamide + arbutin — a gentle yet effective pairing
- Azelaic acid + tranexamic acid — particularly promising for melasma
