Why do lips need special protection?
The skin on your lips is fundamentally different from the skin on the rest of your body. The stratum corneum here is 3–5 times thinner, the absence of sebaceous glands means zero natural sebum production, and the lack of melanin makes lips particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of UV radiation. On top of that comes constant exposure to moisture (saliva), heat (hot drinks) and friction.
This is precisely why lips dry out faster than any other part of the body — and why the formula of a care or colour lip product matters so much.
Ingredients that genuinely moisturise and protect lips
Lanolin — the gold standard of lip protection
Lanolin is a fat derived from sheep's wool, chemically similar to the lipids of human skin. Its exceptional water-binding capacity (it absorbs 200% of its own weight) makes it one of the most effective emollients for lips. Lanolin forms an occlusive layer that prevents water loss while still allowing the skin to breathe.
Note: in roughly 1–3% of the population, lanolin can cause contact dermatitis. If you are prone to allergies, patch-test on a small area before regular use.
Shea butter (Butyrospermum Parkii Butter)
Shea butter is a rich emollient containing natural fatty acids (oleic, stearic, palmitic) along with phytosterols and vitamins A, E and F. It moisturises, regenerates and soothes. In lip products it serves a dual purpose: it softens the lips and stabilises the formula, giving it a creamy texture.
Beeswax (Cera Alba / Beeswax)
Beeswax is a natural wax with occlusive properties — it forms a thin protective layer on the lips that slows transepidermal water loss (TEWL). It does not moisturise on its own, but it "locks" hydration in beneath it. That is why it works best combined with humectant ingredients (such as hyaluronic acid) or emollients (such as shea butter).
Beeswax is generally well tolerated, but people allergic to bee products should avoid it. Alternatives include candelilla wax (Euphorbia Cerifera Wax) and carnauba wax (Copernicia Cerifera Wax) — both vegan.
Ceramides
Ceramides (Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP) are lipids that occur naturally in the skin's stratum corneum and are responsible for the integrity of the lipid barrier. In lip products, ceramides help rebuild the damaged protective barrier of the lips, which is especially beneficial in winter, on chapped lips, and after aesthetic treatments (such as hyaluronic acid lip fillers).

Panthenol is pro-vitamin B5 with a proven moisturising, soothing and skin-regenerating effect. It performs especially well in lip products because it absorbs quickly and leaves no sticky film. A concentration of 1–5% delivers a visible moisturising effect.
Ingredients that can dry your lips out
Menthol, camphor, eucalyptus
These ingredients create a sensation of "cooling relief" on chapped lips, but paradoxically they can make the condition worse. Menthol, Camphor and Eucalyptus irritate the thin skin of the lips, can trigger micro-inflammation and lead to a vicious circle: irritation → dryness → more balm → more irritation.
Phenol
Phenol is a powerful antiseptic found in some "medicated" lip balms. At low concentrations it has an exfoliating action, but on the delicate skin of the lips it can cause chemical irritation and paradoxical drying. If your balm seems "addictive" — check whether it contains phenol.
Denatured alcohol (Alcohol Denat.)
Rarely found in care lip balms, but present in some coloured lipsticks and glosses as a solvent. Denatured alcohol strips the skin of oils and speeds up water evaporation — exactly the opposite of what lips need.
Artificial colourants and fragrances
Although they do not dry the lips directly, artificial colourants (such as Red 6 Lake, Red 7 Lake) and synthetic fragrance compositions (Parfum/Fragrance) can cause allergic contact inflammation of the lips (cheilitis). It manifests as dryness, cracking and redness — often mistakenly interpreted as "dry lips" requiring more balm.
SPF in lip products — underrated protection
Lips are particularly exposed to UV radiation because they lack melanin and have a thin stratum corneum. Skin cancer of the lower lip (carcinoma) accounts for around 25–30% of oral cavity cancers, and the main risk factor is precisely UV exposure.
A lip product with SPF 15–30 is the minimum level of protection, especially in summer and at high altitudes. Look for formulas with mineral filters (Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide) or chemical filters (Octocrylene, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate).
