Skincare in the Mountains — UV, Wind and Frost at Altitude

UV rises 10–12% per 1000 m of altitude and snow reflects 80% of it. Learn how to protect your skin on the slopes and in mountain conditions.

Picture this: it's February, the temperature is -10°C, and you're skiing in the Tatra Mountains. The sky is overcast, so you skip the sunscreen. That evening, in the mirror, you see the classic "ski goggles" sunburn — redness everywhere except where the goggles sat. What went wrong? Almost everything.

UV at altitude — the physics that hurts

Every 1000 metres of elevation gain means an increase in UV intensity of 10–12%. At the summit of Kasprowy Wierch (1987 m above sea level), UV radiation is roughly 20–24% stronger than at sea level. On Alpine slopes at 3000 m — 30–36% stronger.

Why? A thinner layer of atmosphere filters out less UVB radiation. But that's only half the problem.

The albedo effect — snow as a UV mirror

Albedo is the coefficient that describes how much radiation a surface reflects. Compare:

  • Fresh snow: 80–90% — almost all the radiation bounces off the surface and hits your skin from below.
  • Sand: 15–20% — far less, which is why on the beach you mostly tan "from above".
  • Water: 20–25% — moderate reflection.
  • Grass: 3–5% — minimal.

In practice this means that on a ski slope you receive UV from two directions at once: directly from the sun and reflected off the snow. The combined UV dose can be twice as high as in a city at the same latitude. That's why sunburn while skiing happens even when it's cloudy — clouds let through 60–80% of UVA.

SPF 50+ — non-negotiable

In the mountains there's no room for compromise on sun protection:

  • A minimum of SPF 50+ with broad spectrum (UVA + UVB) — anything lower simply doesn't provide enough protection under double exposure.
  • Apply 2 mg/cm² to the face — that's about half a teaspoon. Most people use only a third of the recommended amount.
  • Reapply every 2 hours — and after every bout of heavy sweating. On the slopes, that means reapplying at every break at the top.
  • Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) — more stable in extreme conditions than chemical filters; they don't break down under UV as quickly.

Wind and frost — the invisible aggressors

UV isn't the only threat in the mountains. Föhn or Alpine winds can reach 60–100 km/h along the ridges, and combined with frost they create wind chill — a perceived temperature far lower than the actual one.

What wind and frost do to your skin:

  • They destroy the lipid barrier — wind physically strips the hydrolipidic film from the surface of the skin.
  • They accelerate TEWL — transepidermal water loss rises by as much as 40% in strong wind.
  • They trigger wind erythema — redness and a burning sensation that looks like sunburn but has a different mechanism.
  • They cause chapped lips — lips have no sebaceous glands and no stratum corneum comparable to the rest of the face.

A protective mountain routine

Morning (before heading out onto the slope)

  1. Gentle cleansing — cleansing milk or micellar water, no foaming gels (they dry the skin out).
  2. Hyaluronic acid serum — but only under occlusion! In dry, frosty air, HA on its own can actually dehydrate.
  3. A rich occlusive cream with ceramides — forms a barrier against wind and frost.
  4. SPF 50+ mineral filter — on top, a generous layer on the face, ears and neck.
  5. SPF 30+ lip balm — the most commonly skipped step, yet the lips are the most exposed.

On the slope

  • Reapply SPF every 2 hours — SPF 50+ sticks are the most convenient on the slope (no need to take your gloves off).
  • Lip balm every hour — wind blows it off the skin faster than the cream on your face.
  • Don't lick your lips — saliva evaporates and dries them out even more.

Evening (after returning)

  1. Mild cleansing — oil + cleansing milk, not a foaming gel.
  2. Serum with panthenol (5%) — repairs irritated skin.
  3. Cream with ceramides and cholesterol — rebuilds the barrier damaged by the wind.
  4. Shea butter or petroleum jelly on the lips — a thick layer overnight.

The goggle line — how to prevent it?

The distinctive "racoon eyes" sunburn — a tanned face with white "glasses" — isn't just a cosmetic problem, it's a sign of uneven UV exposure. The skin under the goggles is protected while the rest of the face gets a double dose.

Prevention:

  • SPF 50+ under the goggles and on the rest of the face — even out the protection.
  • A neck gaiter/balaclava with a UV filter — UPF 50+ fabrics protect the lower part of the face.
  • Goggles with a large lens — the more surface area protected physically, the smaller the transition line.

Lips have no sebaceous glands to produce the sebum that forms a natural protective film. The stratum corneum of the lips is also much thinner than on the rest of the face. Combined with wind, frost and UV reflected off the snow, the lips lose moisture many times faster than other areas of the face.
