Daily shaving is genuine mechanical stress for the skin. A razor strips away not just hair but also the outer layers of the epidermis, which, with a poorly formulated shaving product, means irritation, ingrown hairs and chronic inflammation of the hair follicles. That is why the choice between a shaving oil and a shaving foam is worth basing on the INCI list rather than on feel alone.
Shaving foams — what is hiding in the aerosol?
A classic aerosol shaving foam contains several groups of ingredients:
- Anionic surfactants — mainly TEA-Stearate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or the milder Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). These create the lather and emulsify sebum, but with repeated use they can disrupt the skin's lipid barrier;
- Propane and Butane (propellants) — the gases that power the aerosol; safe for the skin on their own, though they require an airtight container;
- Glycerin — a humectant that reduces razor friction;
- Menthol or camphor — found in many popular brands; they deliver a fresh sensation but can irritate reactive skin.
Mass-market products also frequently contain EDTA, parabens or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (e.g. DMDM Hydantoin). These are not banned under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, but it is worth checking for their presence in our catalogue of shaving foams.
Shaving oils — the philosophy of lipid protection
Shaving oils are far simpler formulas. A typical composition is based on a few plant oils or a blend of oils with a handful of active ingredients:
- Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil — high viscosity, excellent glide, protects the razor from excessive friction;
- Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil or Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil — moisturising, rich in linoleic and oleic acids;
- Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil — a liquid wax that closely resembles human sebum and does not clog pores;
- Essential oils (lavender, eucalyptus) — note: these may be potential allergens under the EU directive (26 fragrance allergens subject to mandatory declaration).
Because they lack anionic surfactants, shaving oils do not disturb the skin's acidic pH (around 4.5–5.5). They do have one drawback, however: after shaving they need to be rinsed off thoroughly with water and an emulsifier (shower gel), since plain water does not wash oils away.
Which ingredients protect against ingrown hairs?
Ingrown hairs and folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles) are the most common problem after shaving sensitive skin. Helpful ingredients in shaving products include:
- Salicylic Acid 0.5–2% — a keratolytic BHA, oil-soluble, that penetrates the follicle openings and removes dead skin cells;
- Allantoin — soothes redness and speeds up epidermal renewal;
- Witch Hazel (Hamamelis Virginiana) — a gentle astringent polyphenol that tightens pores after shaving.

Comparing pH and skin barrier integrity
A shaving foam with SLS can temporarily raise the skin's pH to 7–8, which for several hours after shaving increases susceptibility to bacterial infection and irritation. Plant oils do not alter pH and preserve the hydrolipidic film.
Studies (including those published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology) confirm that products rich in ceramides and plant lipids contribute to faster recovery of the epidermis's barrier function after a mechanical procedure such as shaving.
Who should use an oil, and who should use a foam?
- Shaving oil — recommended for dry, sensitive skin that is prone to irritation, atopy or ingrown hairs. Especially when shaving the legs and underarms, where the skin is thin;
- Shaving foam — convenient for normal and oily skin, particularly with dense growth that calls for better visibility of the areas being shaved;
- For men's faces prone to Pseudofolliculitis Barbae (PFB): consider a shaving gel with salicylic acid or jojoba oil as a base.

It depends on the oil used. Jojoba, raspberry seed oil and hemp oil have a low comedogenic rating. Heavier coconut or cocoa oils can block pores in people prone to acne.
SLS is an approved cosmetic ingredient (CosIng), but with daily use it can disrupt the skin's lipid barrier. People with sensitive or atopic skin should choose formulas with gentler surfactants, such as Cocamidopropyl Betaine.
Apply a few drops of oil to damp skin and spread it with your fingers — the layer of oil forms a protective film. Shave with slow strokes in the direction of hair growth, then rinse with warm water and a mild emulsifier.
Shaving gel usually contains thickening polymers (Carbomer, Hydroxyethylcellulose) instead of aerosol propellant gases. The absence of propellants removes one potential irritant, and the gel's consistency provides better visibility while shaving.
