Hair conditioner — your everyday companion
A classic conditioner is designed for daily or regular use after every shampoo wash. Its main jobs are:
- Neutralising electrostatic charge — cationic ingredients (e.g. behentrimonium chloride, cetrimonium chloride) cling to the negatively charged surface of the hair, smoothing the cuticle.
- Surface hydration — glycerin, panthenol, sodium PCA.
- Easier detangling — silicones (dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane) or film-forming polymers.

Hair mask — intensive treatment

- Penetrating oils (coconut oil, olive oil, rice bran oil) — thanks to their small molecules and low polarity, they reach the hair cortex.
- Shea butter, mango butter — these work more on the surface, forming a protective film and smoothing the hair.

Key differences: ingredients and contact time
Beyond ingredient concentration, they also differ in how they interact with the hair:
- Conditioner works mainly on the surface of the cuticle — it evens out, smooths and protects. The effect: immediate, everyday comfort.
- Mask aims to penetrate the cortex — rebuilding the internal structure. The effect: long-term repair, filling protein gaps and reducing breakage.
If the hair is mechanically damaged (split ends, brittle strands), conditioner alone won't repair the internal structure. You need the proteins and ceramides found in a mask.
Protein–moisture balance — how to avoid overdoing it
Using protein-rich masks too often can lead to protein overload: the hair becomes stiff, rough and brittle. The signs:
