The problem with dry winter air

In winter we spend up to 90% of our time in closed, heated rooms. Central heating, electric radiators and air conditioning drastically lower air humidity — from the optimal 40–60% down to as little as 15–20%. That is comparable to the humidity of the Sahara, and our skin has to cope with it for many hours every day.

Dry air affects the skin on several levels: it speeds up water evaporation from the epidermis, weakens the hydrolipid barrier and changes the way moisturising cosmetics work. Understanding these mechanisms is the key to an effective winter skincare routine.

TEWL — transepidermal water loss

TEWL (Transepidermal Water Loss) is the continuous evaporation of water from the deeper layers of the skin through the epidermis into the surroundings. It is a natural, physiological phenomenon, but its rate depends on two factors: the condition of the skin barrier and the humidity of the environment.

When air humidity is low, the water concentration gradient between the skin and its surroundings is large — water "escapes" from the epidermis faster. Dermatological studies show that in rooms with humidity below 30%, TEWL rises by as much as 25–40% compared with optimal conditions. This means that even healthy skin with an intact barrier loses water faster in dry air.

Chronically elevated TEWL leads to a cascade of problems: dryness, loss of elasticity, more pronounced wrinkles, stinging and increased sensitivity to irritation. That is why many people notice their skin getting worse in winter, even though they use the same cosmetics as in summer.

Humectants need moisture from the environment

Here we come to a paradox that surprises many people: popular moisturising ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and urea are humectants — substances that attract water. But where do they attract it from?

In optimal conditions (humidity above 40%), humectants draw water from the surrounding air and deliver it to the epidermis. In very dry air (below 30%), however, the situation reverses — humectants can start to draw water from the deeper layers of the skin, worsening hydration instead of improving it.

This does not mean humectants are bad — quite the opposite, they are essential. But their effectiveness depends on the conditions they work in. That is why it is so important to combine humectants with occlusives (ingredients that form a protective layer) and to ensure adequate air humidity in the room. Dermatologists and health organisations (including the WHO) recommend keeping indoor air humidity at 40–60%. This is the range in which:

  • TEWL stays at a physiological, low level.

  • The mucous membranes of the nose and throat stay moist (which also supports immunity).

Humidity below 30% is decidedly unfavourable for the skin. Above 65%, on the other hand, it encourages the growth of mould and dust mites, which is a health problem — especially for allergy sufferers.

Humidifiers — which one to choose?

There are three main types of humidifier on the market:

Ultrasonic humidifiers

They run quietly and use little energy. They produce a cool mist using ultrasound. The downside is that you have to use distilled or filtered water, because minerals from tap water can settle on furniture as a fine white dust.

Steam (warm-mist) humidifiers

They heat water to boiling point, producing sterile water vapour. The advantage is that they eliminate bacteria and mould from the water. The downside — higher energy use and a risk of scalding, which matters in homes with children.

Evaporative humidifiers

They use the natural process of evaporation — a fan passes air through a damp filter. They do not over-humidify the air (they self-regulate as humidity rises), but they require regular filter changes.

Humidifier and skincare — a synergy

A humidifier won't replace a good cream, but it can significantly boost its effectiveness. Here's how to combine both strategies:

  1. Place the humidifier in the bedroom — you spend 7–8 hours there, and the skin's nightly regeneration works more efficiently in humidified air.
  2. Keep humidity at 40–60% — monitor it with a hygrometer and adjust the humidifier's output.
  3. Apply a humectant serum before bed — hyaluronic acid and glycerin will be able to draw water from the humidified air.
  4. Seal with an occlusive — a layer of cream with dimethicone or petrolatum will lock water into the skin.
  5. Don't forget to ventilate — even in winter, short, intensive airing (5 minutes) improves air quality without a drastic drop in humidity.

People with sensitive skin will feel the difference most after introducing a humidifier. Their skin barrier is naturally weaker, so dry air hits it with double force.

Proper humidity at home isn't just about beautiful skin. Humidified air:
