Pigments and colorants in powders

Face powders contain pigments that match the shade to your skin tone. In line with Annex IV of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, the following are used:

  • CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499 (Iron Oxides) — a wide range of browns and beiges,
  • CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide) — lightens the shade and often also acts as a UVB filter,
  • CI 77766 (Pearl, Silica + TiO2) — pearlescent effects in illuminating powders,
  • CI 77007 (Ultramarines) — corrects yellowish tones in cool-undertone powders.

Mineral powders — are they better?

"Mineral" is a marketing term that has no strictly regulated definition for cosmetics in the EU. Products described as mineral typically contain Mica, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide and Iron Oxides — with no talc, mineral oils, preservatives or fragrances.

Advantages of mineral powders:

  • a minimalist composition — fewer potential allergens,
  • Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide act as physical sun filters,
  • good tolerance by sensitive and acne-prone skin.

Disadvantages:

  • a photoaging effect from Titanium Dioxide in nano form — the SCCS has assessed nano-TiO2 and deemed it safe in non-spray products, but advises caution in powders applied with a brush (inhalation of particles),
  • they can have a strong "whitening" effect on fair skin tones.
