The best soap of 2026 for sensitive, dry and normal skin. We analyse INCI, pH and surfactants so you can pick a soap that's safe for your skin.

Soap is one of the oldest cosmetic products known to humankind — and, at the same time, one of those consumers most often get wrong when buying. Not every soap is equally gentle on the skin, and classic alkaline soaps (pH 9–10) can permanently disrupt the hydrolipidic barrier with regular use. In our 2026 ranking, we focus on products that cleanse effectively without destroying the skin's microbiome and acid mantle.

Classic soap vs. syndets — the key difference

On the market there are two fundamentally different types of product referred to as "soap":

  • Classic soap (toilet soap) — a salt of fatty acids (e.g. Sodium Palmate, Sodium Cocoate), with a pH in the 9–10 range, potentially irritating for sensitive skin,
  • Syndet (synthetic detergent) — a cleansing product based on synthetic surfactants, formulated to a pH of 5.5–6.5 and considerably gentler on the skin.

Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 sets out the safety requirements for both product types, but it is the synthetic part of the formula that determines mildness and skin tolerance. You'll find detailed information on surfactants in our INCI ingredient encyclopedia.

Surfactants — which ones are safe?

The key to assessing a soap's mildness is the type and combination of surfactants used. The evaluation draws, among other things, on irritation potential expressed by the ZEIN value (Zein Number) and on SCCS opinions.

Gentle surfactants (recommended)

  • Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) — one of the mildest anionic surfactants, excellent tolerance, creamy lather, pH around 5–6,
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine — amphoteric and gentle, used as a co-factor to reduce the irritation of the primary surfactant,
  • Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate — a coconut-derived, very mild surfactant well suited to sensitive skin,
  • Coco-Glucoside / Lauryl Glucoside — non-ionic sugar surfactants that are very well tolerated and biodegradable.

Irritating surfactants (avoid or check the concentration)

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) — potentially strongly irritating at higher concentrations and with frequent use; the SCCS points to disruption of the skin barrier,
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) — milder than SLS and acceptable, though it may contain trace amounts of 1,4-dioxane (limits regulated in the EU),
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate — a profile similar to SLS.

Glycerin soaps — why they're worth it

Glycerin soaps contain Glycerin as one of their key ingredients. Glycerin is a humectant with exceptionally well-documented efficacy and safety — it binds water in the epidermis, compensating for the dehydration caused by cleansing surfactants. Glycerin soaps typically have a pH closer to the skin's physiological range (5.5–7) and leave the skin feeling less tight.

What to look for in a glycerin soap:

  • Glycerin should appear among the first 5 ingredients,
  • no — or only a low concentration of — irritating essential oils,
  • the presence of additional emollients (e.g. Shea Butter — Butyrospermum Parkii Butter, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride).

Natural and organic soaps — myth or value?

"Natural" and "organic" are marketing terms that, in the European Union, have no unambiguous legal definition at the cosmetic level (unlike ECOCERT, COSMOS or NaTrue). Natural soaps are usually based on vegetable oils saponified with sodium or potassium hydroxide.

Advantages of natural soaps:

  • a high glycerin content (formed naturally during saponification),
  • no synthetic preservatives or stabilisers,
  • biodegradability and a smaller environmental footprint.

Disadvantages:

  • an alkaline pH (9–10) — potentially disruptive to the skin barrier,
  • no standardisation of active-ingredient concentrations,
  • a shorter shelf life, especially without preservatives.

Antibacterial soaps — when are they really needed?

Soaps labelled "antibacterial" usually contain Triclosan or Chloroxylenol (PCMX). In the European Union, Triclosan is permitted only in toothpaste (up to 0.3%) and as a preservative up to 0.2%. Its use in hand soaps has been restricted. Regular use of soap containing Triclosan shows no advantage over standard handwashing in reducing infections in domestic settings (CDC and WHO data).

The exception is the medical and food-service environment, where strict hygiene is clinically justified.

Preservatives in soaps — which are acceptable?

Syndet soaps require preservation because of their high water content. Safe and widely used preservatives include:

  • Phenoxyethanol — permitted up to a concentration of 1% by the SCCS,
  • Sodium Benzoate + Potassium Sorbate — natural combined preservatives, effective at pH below 5,
  • Ethylhexylglycerin — often used as a preservative booster.

Avoid Methylisothiazolinone (MI) in rinse-off products above 0.0015% — the SCCS points to a high risk of contact allergy.

Ranking of gentle soaps — the key 2026 criteria

  1. a product pH in the 5.0–7.0 range (syndet) or information about a buffered formula,
  2. Glycerin among the first 3 ingredients,
  3. no SLS, or only a very low concentration acting as a co-factor,
  4. gentle surfactants as the base (SCI, Betaine, Glucoside),
  5. no — or a minimal amount of — fragrance, as fragrances are one of the leading causes of contact dermatitis.

Summary

When choosing a soap in 2026, remember: the wash pH matters, and the surfactants determine the mildness. For sensitive, atopic and dry skin, a syndet with glycerin and gentle surfactants is always a safer choice than a classic alkaline soap. SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) can disrupt the skin's hydrolipidic barrier with regular use, especially in people with sensitive or atopic skin. It is not banned under EU law, but those with sensitive skin should opt for products with gentler surfactants.

In a domestic setting, ordinary soap is just as effective at removing pathogens as antibacterial soap, according to WHO and CDC data. Soaps containing Triclosan have limited use in the EU. Proper washing technique (at least 20 seconds) matters more than the type of soap.
