Why does the skin on your hands age faster?

The hands are one of the areas of the body most exposed to external factors: detergents, water, frost and UV radiation. The skin on the backs of the hands is thin, contains few sebaceous glands and quickly loses moisture through transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Moisturisers (humectants)

• Glycerin — the most popular humectant, drawing water from the air into the epidermis. Effective at concentrations of 5–10%.
• Hyaluronic Acid — capable of binding water up to 1,000 times its own weight. It is especially valuable in hand creams because the skin on the hands loses moisture so quickly.
• Urea — at a concentration of 5–10% it is an excellent humectant, while above 10–20% it acts keratolytically, which helps with very rough skin. At concentrations up to 10% it is classified as a cosmetic ingredient under Regulation 1223/2009.
• Panthenol (Provitamin B5) — soothes irritation and speeds up epidermal regeneration.

Emollients (softeners and sealants)

• Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii) — rich in fatty acids (oleic, stearic), it forms a protective film and strengthens the lipid barrier.
• Ceramides — lipids identical to the components of the skin barrier. They rebuild the hydrolipidic mantle damaged by frequent hand washing.
• Squalane — a light, stable plant-derived emollient (from olives or sugar cane) that absorbs without leaving a greasy film.
• Lanolin (Lanolinum) — one of the most effective occlusive emollients, though it can cause allergic reactions in people with a wool allergy.

Repairing and protective ingredients

• Tocopherol (Vitamin E) — an antioxidant that supports regeneration and stabilises other ingredients.
• Allantoin — speeds up the exfoliation of dead skin cells and stimulates cell proliferation. Effective for dryness and cracking.
• Niacinamide — strengthens the skin barrier, reduces TEWL and evens out skin tone (useful for discolouration on the backs of the hands).

Hand creams and detergents — an important issue

Frequent hand washing and contact with detergents (SLS, SLES) damage the lipid barrier of the epidermis. A good hand cream should contain ceramides or other structural lipids that rebuild it. If you wash your hands repeatedly throughout the day (medical professions, catering), look for creams with ceramides and urea in the upper half of the INCI list.

Daytime hand cream vs. night cream

• Day cream: Light texture, fast absorption, no greasy film — so it doesn't get in the way while you work. Good formulas are O/W emulsions with humectants and light emollients.
• Night cream: Thicker consistency, occlusive formula — ideally applied before bed under cotton gloves. Shea butter, lanolin and beeswax (Cera Alba) provide occlusion. The "overnight mask" technique significantly improves the condition of very dry skin.
