How do we rate deodorants in the 2026 ranking?

The deodorant market grows every year, and choosing a product can feel overwhelming. In the PurScore.pl ranking, we assess every deodorant against three criteria: how effectively it works, the safety of its INCI formula and how well sensitive skin tolerates it. We're not swayed by advertising or a brand's budget — what matters is what's in the formula.

The legal foundation for cosmetics sold in the EU is Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council, which sets out the lists of permitted, prohibited and restricted substances. Every ingredient shown in the PurScore ingredient encyclopaedia is checked against the opinions of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS).

Deodorant or antiperspirant — which to choose?

This is a fundamental distinction that rankings often overlook. A deodorant neutralises the odour produced by skin bacteria without blocking sweat. An antiperspirant contains aluminium salts (most often aluminium chloride or aluminium chlorohydrate), which mechanically constrict the sweat ducts.

• Aluminium salts: The SCCS has repeatedly assessed aluminium chlorohydrate. The current opinion (SCCS/1514/13 and updates) indicates that underarm use at concentrations of up to 10.60% poses no health risk under normal conditions. No link to breast cancer or Alzheimer's disease has been confirmed at the level of scientific evidence.
• Aluminium-free: These products rely on alternatives such as alum stone (potassium alum), zinc salts, essential oils or probiotics. They are less effective at blocking sweat, but the formula is often preferred by people with irritated skin.

Key ingredients worth knowing

Before we get to the list, it helps to understand which substances determine a deodorant's quality. You can browse the full database in our ingredient encyclopaedia.

• Triclosan — an antibacterial preservative, though restricted in the EU (max. 0.3% in deodorants under Annex V of Regulation 1223/2009). Increasingly rare.
• Alcohol Denat. — fast-acting antibacterial effect, but can dry out the skin with daily use.
• Zinc Ricinoleate — neutralises odour molecules, well tolerated and popular in natural deodorants.
• Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda) — effective pH neutralisation, but can cause irritation in some people with prolonged use.
• Probiotics (Lactobacillus spp.) — a new direction that supports the skin's microbiome; clinical data is limited, but the results are promising.

Most effective antiperspirants

This category is dominated by products with proven sweat-reducing action — the key ingredient is aluminium chlorohydrate or aluminium glycol. Roll-on and stick formats usually deliver better skin contact than sprays. When assessing products in the deodorant category of the PurScore database, check where aluminium sits on the INCI list — the higher up, the higher the concentration.

Best aluminium-free deodorants

Formulas based on alum stone (potassium alum) are a tradition going back centuries. It's worth knowing that potassium alum is an aluminium salt, albeit with a larger molecule and different absorption than the synthetic salts used in antiperspirants. Products with Zinc Ricinoleate, tea tree oil (Tea Tree Oil — Melaleuca Alternifolia) and plant extracts appear ever more often in reviews as effective alternatives.

Deodorants for sensitive skin and post-shaving

Look for formulas without alcohol, without artificial colourants and without Parfum (fragrance). Bisabolol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice and Panthenol have good soothing properties. Avoid products with a high concentration of Alcohol Denat. at the top of the INCI list.

How to read a deodorant label?

Ingredients on the INCI list are listed in descending order of concentration (above 1%). Ingredients below 1% may be listed in any order. When you see Aqua in first place and Aluminum Chlorohydrate in third or fourth, the product contains a relatively high concentration of aluminium salts. If you're interested in a specific substance, use our best-of lists or search for the product directly.

Certifications worth knowing

• COSMOS Organic / COSMOS Natural — a certification for natural and organic cosmetics, governed by ECOCERT, BDIH and other bodies.
• Vegan Society — no animal-derived ingredients and no animal testing.
• Dermatologically tested — a term that is not legally regulated; it's worth looking for specific study results.
