Antiperspirant vs. deodorant — the fundamental difference

The two terms are often used interchangeably, but from a chemical and regulatory standpoint they are two different types of product. A deodorant works by neutralising or masking the smell of sweat without affecting the sweating process itself. An antiperspirant, on the other hand, contains aluminium salts (most commonly Aluminum Chlorohydrate, Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex Gly), which physically reduce sweat secretion by temporarily blocking the ducts of the sweat glands.

Aluminium salts — what does the science say?

Aluminium salts have been the active ingredient in antiperspirants for decades. In recent years their safety has been the subject of numerous scientific debates, particularly regarding a potential link to breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease. In its opinion SCCS/1613/19 (final opinion from 2020, corrigendum SCCS/1629/21), the SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety) concluded that the use of aluminium salts in antiperspirants at permitted concentrations (up to 10.6% for Aluminum Chlorohydrate) is safe for consumers. The scientific research to date does not confirm a causal link with either breast cancer or Alzheimer's disease.

It is worth bearing in mind, however, that the SCCS noted there is insufficient data for people with damaged skin (e.g. after shaving) and recommended caution in such situations.

Aluminium-free antiperspirants — effective alternatives?

A growing number of antiperspirants based on alternative active ingredients are available on the market:

  • Aluminium hydroxychloride in its natural form (potassium alum) — a traditional crystal, popular in natural cosmetics. Its particles are larger than those of synthetic aluminium salts, which in theory limits absorption.
  • Tapioca and corn starch (Tapioca Starch, Zea Mays Starch) — absorbs moisture but does not block sweating.
  • Zinc (Zinc Ricinoleate, Zinc Oxide) — neutralises the bacteria responsible for odour.
  • Triethyl Citrate — inhibits the activity of bacteria that break down sweat.

It should be stressed that aluminium-free products are deodorants, not antiperspirants — they do not physically reduce sweating.

Other ingredients worth paying attention to

When reviewing the composition of an antiperspirant, look out for:

  • Ethyl alcohol (Alcohol Denat.) — often used as a carrier; it can irritate the skin after shaving and in cases of hypersensitivity.
  • Fragrance (Parfum) — a common cause of contact dermatitis. Check whether the product contains substances from the European list of 26 fragrance allergens.
  • BHT/BHA — antioxidants used as preservatives; their safety in antiperspirants is currently under SCCS assessment.
