Gel polish lasts considerably longer, but proper nail preparation is crucial: degreasing, base coat, layer thickness and curing time under the lamp.
Impact on the nail plate — facts and myths
You often hear that gel polish ruins the nails. The truth is more nuanced:
- Gel polish itself, when applied and removed correctly, does not damage the nail plate any more than classic polish
- The greatest risk comes from mechanical peeling or overly aggressive removal with a file — this destroys the keratin layers
- Wearing it for too long (over 4–5 weeks) leads to lifting and damage to the nail plate
- Regular breaks between applications and the use of a nail conditioner help keep the nail plate in good condition

Removing polish — the crucial step
Classic polish is removed with acetone or acetone-free remover within seconds. Gel polish requires soaking in acetone for 10–15 minutes (the foil or bowl method) and gently lifting off the softened mass with an orange wood stick.
