What is ferulic acid?

In 2005, Dr Sheldon Pinnell of Duke University published a study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology that transformed the vitamin C serum market. The finding was as follows:
Adding 1% ferulic acid to a solution containing 15% L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and 1% alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) doubled photoprotection — from a fourfold reduction (C+E alone) to an eightfold reduction in erythema formation after UV exposure.
The mechanism: ferulic acid stabilises L-ascorbic acid (which is notoriously unstable and oxidises quickly in solution) and acts synergistically — it regenerates oxidised vitamin E, which in turn regenerates oxidised vitamin C. The result is an antioxidant cascade in which each ingredient strengthens the others.
Dr Pinnell patented this combination, and the licence went to the brand SkinCeuticals, which created the iconic C E Ferulic serum. The patent expired in 2023, opening the door for other manufacturers to use the identical formula.
The C+E+Ferulic formula — the gold standard
According to Duke's research, the optimal combination is:
- 15% L-ascorbic acid (Ascorbic Acid) — at pH 2.5–3.5
- 1% alpha-tocopherol (Tocopherol) — a form of vitamin E
- 0.5–1% ferulic acid (Ferulic Acid)

Stability — the biggest challenge
Despite the stabilising effect of ferulic acid, formulas with pure L-ascorbic acid remain sensitive to:
- Light — store the serum in a dark place and prefer dark-glass bottles
- Air — oxidation progresses once the product is opened; airless packaging is ideal
- Heat — temperatures above 25°C accelerate degradation; in summer, consider storing it in the fridge
- Colour change — a fresh vitamin C serum is colourless or slightly yellow. Once it turns orange or brown, it has oxidised and is no longer effective
Alternative forms of vitamin C (Ascorbyl Glucoside, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Ethyl Ascorbic Acid) are more stable but less well studied in combination with ferulic acid. The synergy from Duke's patent applies specifically to L-ascorbic acid.
Ferulic acid — what it does on its own
Even without vitamin C, ferulic acid offers benefits:
