True zero waste in cosmetics manufacturing is physically impossible — every production process generates some waste. But that doesn't mean it isn't worth trying. - Home composting (OK Compost HOME) — decomposition at ambient temperature (20–30°C), in a garden composter. Far fewer products carry this certificate, because decomposition takes longer (6–12 months) and requires thinner materials.
In practice this means that packaging labeled “compostable” that's thrown into an ordinary bin ends up in landfill, where it will break down over years — just like plastic. The certificate only makes sense if you have access to the right infrastructure.
“Compostable” materials in cosmetics
- PLA (polylactic acid) — a bioplastic made from corn. Industrially compostable, NOT home compostable. It can't be recycled with PET. It looks like plastic, confuses consumers and contaminates the recycling stream.
- Paper/cardboard with a wax coating — home compostable, provided the coating is made of natural wax (not paraffin). Used in tubes, boxes for bars and wrappers.
- Cellulose/cellophane — genuine cellophane (made from cellulose, not plastic) is home compostable. But many “cellophane” wrappers are actually polypropylene.

- Production — even the greenest factory generates waste: energy, heat, wastewater, scrap raw materials.
- Transport — every shipment generates emissions and uses up packaging materials on pallets.
- Regulations — cosmetics require protective packaging (tightness, protection from light, hygiene), which makes doing away with packaging entirely impossible.
- Shelf life — preservative-free products (e.g. bars, powders) have a shorter shelf life and can generate food-style waste if they spoil before use.
Instead of chasing an unreachable “zero,” the realistic goal is “less waste” — fewer items of waste, better choices, conscious trade-offs.
Practical steps to cut bathroom waste
Here are proven strategies, ranked from the most effective:

- “Compostable packaging” without specifics — industrially compostable? At home? To which standard? Missing this information is a warning sign.
- “Eco” packaging with a plastic insert inside — a cardboard box looks eco-friendly, but if there's a plastic tube inside, the packaging isn't any greener.
- “Biodegradable” without test data — the label “biodegradable” with no reference to OECD 301 tests or EN 13432 certification is worthless.
