Honey, Propolis and Royal Jelly in Cosmetics — Naturally Effective or Allergenic?

Bee products in cosmetics — where tradition meets science

Honey, propolis and royal jelly have been part of human skincare since antiquity — Cleopatra reportedly bathed in milk and honey, while the ancient Egyptians used propolis for mummification. Modern cosmetics happily draws on this heritage, but does thousands of years of use actually prove that these ingredients work?

Let's look at each of them in turn — because despite their shared origin, their properties and safety profiles differ significantly.

Honey (Mel / Honey) — a humectant with bonuses

Honey is a complex mixture of sugars (mainly fructose and glucose), water, enzymes, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. In cosmetics it serves several roles:

  • Humectant — thanks to its high sugar content, it attracts and holds water in the skin. In this respect it works much like glycerine, though the mechanism is slightly different.
  • Antibacterial action — honey produces small amounts of hydrogen peroxide through the activity of the enzyme glucose oxidase. This matters in medical applications (wound healing), but in a typical cosmetic cream the concentration is usually too low to make any difference.
  • Soothing properties — clinical studies confirm that honey can reduce redness and support recovery after minor skin injuries.

Manuka honey — worth the price tag?

Manuka honey (Leptospermum scoparium) from New Zealand stands out for its content of methylglyoxal (MGO), which gives it stronger antibacterial properties that are independent of hydrogen peroxide. In medical applications (wound dressings), manuka honey has a solid evidence base.

In cosmetics the picture is less clear-cut — the concentrations of manuka honey in creams are usually too low to reproduce the effects seen in medical studies. You're paying a premium for the name, while the moisturising effect will be comparable to that of ordinary honey. Propolis — a natural antibiotic, with an asterisk

Propolis is a resinous substance that bees collect from tree buds and process with enzymes. It contains more than 300 identified compounds, including flavonoids (pinocembrin, galangin), phenolic acids (CAPE — caffeic acid phenethyl ester), terpenes and vitamins.

In cosmetics, propolis is prized for:

  • Anti-inflammatory action — its flavonoids inhibit the COX-2 and LOX enzymes, reducing inflammation. Clinical studies (albeit small) confirm its effectiveness in reducing acne-related inflammation.
  • Antioxidant activity — CAPE and flavonoids neutralise free radicals. Propolis's antioxidant potential is well documented in vitro.
  • Support for healing — propolis speeds up epidermal regeneration, as confirmed by studies on burn wounds.

But propolis has a serious drawback that makers of "natural" cosmetics don't like to mention — it is one of the most common contact allergens among natural substances.

Royal jelly — an elite ingredient with moderate evidence

Royal jelly is a secretion from the pharyngeal glands of worker bees, used to feed the larva of a future queen. It contains unique proteins (royalactin), 10-HDA (10-hydroxydecenoic acid), B-group vitamins and minerals.

In cosmetics it is credited with the following properties:

  • Anti-aging — in vitro studies show that 10-HDA can stimulate collagen production. The clinical data, however, is limited to a handful of small studies.
  • Moisturising — an effect comparable to that of other protein-based ingredients.
  • Nourishing — a rich vitamin and mineral profile, although whether these components actually penetrate the skin is debatable.

Allergy risk — the elephant in the room of "natural" cosmetics

This is a key aspect that deserves an honest discussion:

  • Propolis — sensitisation affects 1.2–6.6% of the general population (based on patch-test data). Among people with contact eczema the rate is even higher. Propolis is officially recognised as a strong contact allergen by the European Society of Contact Dermatitis.
  • Royal jelly — can trigger anaphylactic reactions in people allergic to bee venom. Such cases are rare with topical use, but they are documented.
  • Honey — the allergy risk is low, but not zero. Honey can contain plant pollens to which a person may be allergic. Anyone with a pollen allergy should be cautious.

This doesn't mean these ingredients are "bad" — but the claim that "natural = safe" is especially misleading in their case.

How to safely add bee products to your skincare routine?

  1. Always do a patch test — apply a small amount of the product to the inner forearm and wait 48 hours. This is especially important with propolis.
  2. Start with honey — it has the lowest allergenic potential of the three and the best value-for-money ratio.
  3. Avoid propolis if you have a known allergy to Peruvian balsam — there is a high degree of cross-reactivity.
  4. Don't combine with strong acids — the pH of honey and propolis is naturally low, and further acidification can lead to irritation.

The ethical angle — bees and cosmetics

It's worth noting that bee products are not vegan, and the way they are harvested raises ethical debates about the exploitation of bees. Cosmetic brands are increasingly offering synthetic equivalents (e.g. synthetic 10-HDA), although their effectiveness is not always comparable.

Summary

Bee products in cosmetics are ingredients with genuine potential — honey as a humectant, propolis as an anti-inflammatory ingredient, royal jelly as a source of unique peptides. But you need to approach them with your eyes open: the allergy risk is real (propolis in particular), and the marketing of "natural" bee-based cosmetics often glosses over this aspect. As always — read the ingredient list, do patch tests and don't be taken in by a romantic tale of the apiary.

Not entirely. Pure honey applied as a mask has a higher concentration of active components and acts as an effective humectant. In a cosmetic cream, honey is just one of many ingredients, and its concentration is usually lower. A cream's moisturising effect depends on the whole formula, not solely on the presence of honey.
