Shampoo and conditioner bars are growing more popular every day — not only among zero-waste enthusiasts, but also among people looking for travel-friendly cosmetics. Before you grab the first bar off the shelf, though, it's worth understanding that not every bar works the same way and that differences in the formula have a direct impact on the condition of your hair.

SCI vs Soap — Two Completely Different Approaches

On the market you'll find two main types of shampoo bar, and they differ fundamentally:

Syndet-Based Bars (SCI, SCS, SLSA)

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) is the surfactant most commonly used in high-quality shampoo bars. Its pH is typically 5.0–6.0, which is close to the natural pH of the scalp (4.5–5.5). As a result, SCI bars:

  • Don't excessively lift the hair cuticle.
  • Don't require an apple cider vinegar rinse after washing.
  • Lather well even in hard water.

Other surfactants found in bars include Sodium Coco-Sulfate (SCS) — slightly stronger, but still milder than classic SLS — and Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate (SLMI), the gentlest of the group.

Saponified-Oil Bars (Soap)

Traditional soap-based shampoos are made through saponification — a reaction of fat (for example coconut or olive oil) with sodium hydroxide. Their pH sits at 9.0–10.5, which is problematic for hair:

  • Alkaline pH lifts the hair cuticle, leading to dullness and tangling.
  • In contact with hard water (which contains calcium and magnesium), insoluble soap scum forms, coating the hair with a grey film.
  • They require an acidic rinse (vinegar, citric acid) after every wash.

This doesn't mean soap bars are bad — they work well for people with thick, healthy hair who don't mind the extra care step. But for most users, syndet bars are the safer choice.

How Does a Conditioner Bar Work?

Conditioner bars work on a different principle than shampoos. Their base is usually cetyl alcohol or cetearyl alcohol (a fatty alcohol — not to be confused with ethyl alcohol!) along with BTMS (Behentrimonium Methosulfate) — a cationic emulsifier that bonds to the negatively charged surface of the hair and smooths the cuticle.

A good conditioner bar also contains:

  • Plant butters (cocoa, shea) — moisture and protection.
  • Proteins (wheat, silk) — strengthening the structure.
  • Panthenol (provitamin B5) — moisture and elasticity.

Storage — the Key to a Long-Lasting Bar

The most common mistake people make with solid cosmetics is improper storage. A bar sitting in a puddle of water at the bottom of the shower will dissolve in a matter of days. Here are the rules that will help a bar last for 60–80 washes or more:

  • Let it dry between uses — place it on a draining soap dish or hang it in a sisal pouch.
  • Don't leave it under running water — set it aside in a dry spot right after use.
  • When travelling — use a metal tin with ventilation holes.
  • Alternate two bars — if you wash your hair daily, rotate two of them so each has time to dry out.

Environmental Impact — the Hard Numbers

Solid cosmetics aren't just about zero-waste aesthetics. Their environmental advantage comes from several measurable factors:

  • Zero plastic — a single shampoo bar replaces 2–3 plastic bottles (250 ml). Over a year that's 6–9 fewer bottles per person.
  • Concentration = a smaller transport footprint — a shampoo bar (50–100 g) is the equivalent of 250–350 ml of liquid shampoo, but weighs 3–5 times less. Less weight = less fuel during transport.
  • Longer lifespan — a well-stored bar lasts for 60–80 washes, while liquid shampoo (250 ml) lasts for 30–40.
  • No preservatives — the dry form doesn't need antibacterial preservatives (such as phenoxyethanol), because bacteria can't multiply without water.

Comparing Surfactants in Shampoo Bars

  • SCS (Sodium Coco-Sulfate) — stronger, rich lather, can be drying. Better for oily hair. pH 5.5–7.0.
  • SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) — strong, cheap, often irritating. Avoid with sensitive skin. pH 5.0–6.5.
  • SLMI (Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate) — the gentlest, less lather, premium. pH 5.0–5.5.

Who Are Bars NOT a Good Choice For?

To be honest — bars aren't a universal solution. They may not work for you if:

  • You have very hard water and use a soap bar (scum buildup). The fix: switch to an SCI bar.
  • You need specialist medicated shampoos (for example, ketoconazole for dandruff) — these require a precise formulation that's hard to replicate in a bar.
  • You're firmly attached to abundant lather — syndet bars lather moderately compared with liquid SLS shampoos.

Practical Tips to Get Started

If you'd like to try solid cosmetics, begin with these steps:

  1. Start with an SCI-based shampoo bar — it's the safest choice to begin with.
  2. Give your hair 2–3 weeks to adjust — switching from silicones and SLS to gentler surfactants takes time.
  3. Don't skip the conditioner — a shampoo bar cleanses but doesn't moisturise. A conditioner (bar or liquid) is still needed.
  4. Read the ingredients, not the slogans — the words “natural shampoo bar” say nothing about pH or surfactants.
