- Linalool — found in lavender, basil and coriander
- Limonene — a citrus compound, common in orange and lemon oils
- Citronellol — a component of rose and geranium oil
- Geraniol — rose oil, lemongrass
- Coumarin — tonka, lavender, cinnamon
- Eugenol — cloves, basil
- Cinnamal (Cinnamaldehyde) — cinnamon
- Hydroxycitronellal — a synthetic lily-of-the-valley scent
- Benzyl Alcohol — jasmine, ylang-ylang (also acts as a preservative)
- Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone — a synthetic violet scent

What does "hypoallergenic" mean?
The term "hypoallergenic" has no legal definition in the European Union or in FDA regulations. It merely means that the manufacturer claims a lower risk of allergic reactions — but does not have to back this up with standardised testing. A "hypoallergenic" product can still contain fragrance allergens, sensitising preservatives or other irritating ingredients.
Equally unregulated are terms such as "dermatologically tested" (tested on skin — but with no indication of the result), "for sensitive skin" and "clinically proven tolerance". The only reliable source of information is the INCI list.
Contact dermatitis — the mechanism
Contact allergy is a type IV (delayed) immune reaction. After the first contact with an allergen (the sensitisation phase), the immune system "remembers" the substance. On subsequent exposures — even months later — it responds with inflammation. This is why an allergy can suddenly develop to a product you've used for years.
The most common symptoms:
- Redness and swelling at the point of contact
- Itching, burning
- Small blisters, peeling of the skin
- In the chronic phase: thickening and lichenification of the skin
Patch testing — the gold standard of diagnosis
If you suspect a contact allergy, patch testing performed by an allergist or dermatologist is the only reliable diagnostic method. Patches containing a set of the most common allergens (the European baseline series covers about 30 substances) are applied to the skin of the back. The doctor assesses the skin's reaction after 48 and 72 hours.

The most common contact allergens in cosmetics
Besides fragrance substances, common contact allergens in cosmetics include:
- Methylisothiazolinone (MI) — a preservative banned in leave-on products since 2016.

- Formaldehyde and its donors — e.g. DMDM Hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Diazolidinyl Urea.
- Lanolin — a natural sheep's wool wax that can be sensitising.

How to read the ingredients to avoid allergens — a practical scheme
- Identify your allergens — ideally through patch testing with a dermatologist.
- Check the end of the INCI list — fragrance allergens are usually listed at the very end, after "Parfum".
- Look for fragrance-free products — the absence of "Parfum / Fragrance" on the INCI list significantly reduces the risk.
- Don't trust "hypoallergenic" labels — read the ingredients instead of the marketing.
- Test new products — apply a small amount to the inner forearm and watch it for 48 hours.
