Collagen — the foundation of youthful skin
Collagen makes up roughly 75–80% of the skin's dry weight and is responsible for its firmness, elasticity, and structural integrity. After the age of 25, collagen production declines by about 1–1.5% per year, and after menopause the process accelerates — in the first 5 years after menopause, skin can lose as much as 30% of its collagen.
This data explains why collagen is one of the most heavily promoted ingredients in anti-aging cosmetics. The problem is that marketing and science say completely different things about how effective collagen is in creams.
Why doesn't collagen in cream penetrate the skin?
The native collagen molecule is a triple-twisted helix with a molecular weight of 300,000 daltons. The skin barrier (the stratum corneum) only lets through molecules with a weight below 500 daltons. This means that collagen applied to the skin is about 600 times too large to penetrate into the dermis, where it could replenish what's been lost.
Collagen in creams works solely as a surface-level moisturizing agent — it forms an occlusive film on the skin that limits transepidermal water loss (TEWL). That's a beneficial effect, but it's identical to what glycerin or hyaluronic acid does — at a far lower price.
Hydrolyzed collagen — is that the solution?
Collagen hydrolysis is the enzymatic or chemical breakdown of the triple helix into smaller fragments — collagen peptides with a weight of 2,000–10,000 daltons. That's a significant reduction, but still several times above the 500 Da penetration threshold.
On the INCI list, look for: Hydrolyzed Collagen, Collagen Amino Acids, Soluble Collagen. These forms have better moisturizing properties than native collagen (better bioavailability on the skin's surface), but they still don't penetrate into the dermis to stimulate the synthesis of new collagen.
An exception may be very short collagen peptides (di- and tripeptides, e.g. prolyl-hydroxyproline) with a weight below 500 Da — isolated in vitro studies suggest they can penetrate, but there's no solid clinical in vivo data. Marine vs. bovine collagen — does the source matter?
In cosmetics we encounter two main sources of collagen:
- Marine collagen (Marine Collagen) — sourced from fish skin and scales. It mainly contains type I collagen. Marketing promotes it as "better absorbed," but in the context of creams that's irrelevant — none of it penetrates the skin. In supplements, marine collagen has slightly better bioavailability thanks to the lower molecular weight of its peptides.
- Bovine collagen (Bovine Collagen) — sourced from cattle skin and bones. It contains type I and III collagen. Historically more popular, but after the BSE crises (mad cow disease), many brands switched to marine sources for marketing reasons.
For cosmetics applied to the skin, the source of collagen has no effect on efficacy — because no native collagen penetrates the skin barrier. The difference only matters with oral supplementation.
Collagen supplements vs. topical application
Oral supplementation with collagen peptides (hydrolysates with a weight of 2,000–5,000 Da) is a completely different story than creams. A systematic review published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (2019), covering 11 studies with 805 participants, found that oral collagen supplementation over 4–24 weeks:
- Improves skin elasticity
- Increases hydration
- Reduces wrinkle depth
The mechanism: after digestion, collagen peptides release amino acids and short peptides (mainly prolyl-hydroxyproline) that reach the fibroblasts in the dermis via the bloodstream and can stimulate the production of new collagen. This doesn't mean collagen supplements are a cure-all — the studies have limitations (small groups, short observation periods, manufacturer funding), and the effects are moderate. But at least there's a biologically plausible mechanism of action — something collagen creams lack.
What actually stimulates collagen production?
Instead of applying collagen to the skin, it's worth using ingredients that stimulate the fibroblasts to produce their own collagen:
- Retinol and retinoids — the gold standard, with dozens of studies confirming the stimulation of type I and III collagen.
- Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) — a cofactor in collagen synthesis, essential for the hydroxylation of proline and lysine.
- Signal peptides (e.g. Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Matrixyl) — small molecules that can penetrate the skin barrier and stimulate fibroblasts.
- Niacinamide — stimulates the production of collagen and ceramides while strengthening the skin barrier.
Summary
Collagen in creams works as a surface moisturizer — it doesn't replenish the skin's lost collagen. Hydrolyzed collagen is a better humectant, but it still doesn't penetrate into the dermis.
