How to Store Cosmetics — Ingredients vs. Shelf Life

Retinol, vitamin C and acids lose their potency when stored badly. Learn what the PAO symbols mean and how to extend the shelf life of your cosmetics.

You buy a vitamin C serum for $20, leave it on the bathroom windowsill — and a month later you're left with a bottle of brown, oxidised liquid that not only doesn't work but may even irritate your skin. Storing cosmetics is a topic that rarely shows up in skincare guides, yet it has a huge impact on how well your products actually perform.

Shelf-life symbols on packaging

Before we get into specific ingredients, let's explain what the symbols on the packaging are telling us:

The PAO symbol (Period After Opening)

An open jar icon with a number and the letter “M” — e.g. 6M, 12M, 24M. It indicates how many months the product retains its properties after opening. PAO applies to products with a shelf life of more than 30 months from manufacture.

The hourglass symbol with a date

If a product has a shelf life of less than 30 months, instead of a PAO you'll find a best-before date (hourglass + date). After that date the product should not be used, even if it was never opened.

Batch number (LOT)

This lets the manufacturer identify the production batch. It's useful for complaints and for recalling products from the market.

Which ingredients degrade the fastest?

Not all cosmetic ingredients are equally stable. Some need extra protection — their effectiveness drops dramatically if stored incorrectly. Check them in detail in our ingredient database.

Retinol (vitamin A)

  • Enemies: light, air, high temperature
  • Retinol breaks down when exposed to UV radiation and oxidises on contact with air
  • Store it in a dark, cool place (not in the fridge, unless the manufacturer recommends it)
  • Choose airless packaging or dark glass bottles with a pump
  • Typical PAO: 6–12M

Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid)

  • Enemies: air, light, water, high temperature
  • The pure form (Ascorbic Acid) is the most effective but the least stable. It oxidises on contact with air, turning yellow and then brown
  • More stable forms: Ascorbyl Glucoside, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Ethyl Ascorbic Acid
  • A serum that has turned brown is oxidised — throw it out
  • Typical PAO: 3–6M after opening

AHA/BHA acids (glycolic, salicylic, lactic)

  • Enemies: UV light, high temperature
  • The acids themselves are fairly stable chemically, but the pH of the solution can shift over time, reducing effectiveness
  • Store in the original packaging, away from light
  • Typical PAO: 12M

Niacinamide (vitamin B3)

  • Relatively stable — a molecule that's resistant to light and heat
  • Note: at high temperatures (above 40°C) and low pH it can convert into niacin, which causes skin redness
  • Typical PAO: 12–24M

Plant oils

  • Enemies: air, light
  • Oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids (rosehip, linseed, argan) go rancid on contact with air
  • Rancid oil has a distinctive, unpleasant smell and can irritate the skin
  • Typical PAO: 6–12M

Temperature and light — the two main enemies

Temperature

Most cosmetics are best stored at 15–25°C. A bathroom with a shower is one of the worst spots — steam and temperature swings speed up degradation. Better options:

  • The bedroom (stable temperature, no humidity)
  • A cabinet in the hallway
  • The fridge — ONLY for products that require it (some vitamin C serums, probiotics). Most cosmetics should not be refrigerated.

Light

UV radiation breaks down retinol, vitamin C and many antioxidants. That's why manufacturers package them in:

  • Dark bottles (brown, violet or black glass)
  • Airless packaging — sealed pumps with no air contact
  • Aluminium tubes — impermeable to light and air

If a manufacturer packages a retinol serum in a clear bottle with a dropper, that's a red flag. Either the formula is less sensitive than claimed, or the manufacturer isn't paying attention to its stability.

Packaging matters

  • Jar — the worst option for sensitive ingredients. Every opening exposes the entire contents to air and bacteria. Fine for masks and body butter, terrible for vitamin C serums.
  • Dropper bottle — better than a jar, but the dropper introduces air. Acceptable for stable formulas.
  • Pump (airless) — the best option. It minimises contact with air and bacteria, and dosing is precise.
  • Tube — a good option. Minimal air exposure and easy to squeeze out.

Practical storage rules

  1. Note the opening date — write on the packaging with a marker when you first opened the product
  2. Keep it away from windows — even indirect sunlight degrades active ingredients
  3. Seal it tightly — air is the enemy of retinol, vitamin C and oils
  4. Don't dilute with water — adding water to a cosmetic introduces bacteria and changes the pH
  5. Throw it out after the PAO — an expired cosmetic can irritate your skin and stop working
  6. Don't decant it — transferring a cosmetic to another container exposes it to contaminants
