Eucerin — over 100 years of research-driven dermocosmetics

Eucerin is a brand that doesn't chase trends. Founded in 1900 by pharmacist Oscar Troplowitz (who invented the first stable water-in-oil emulsion), it now belongs to Beiersdorf AG — the same group behind NIVEA. But while NIVEA targets the mass market, Eucerin is the dermocosmetic arm with access to one of the largest private research centres in Europe. Let's see what that means in practice when it comes to formulations.

Urea — Eucerin's flagship ingredient

If Eucerin has one signature ingredient, it's urea. It occurs naturally in the skin as part of the NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor). Eucerin uses it at precisely chosen concentrations:

  • 5% urea (face) — hydration and gentle exfoliation for dry and very dry skin. At 5%, urea acts mainly as a humectant — drawing water into the stratum corneum. Found in the UreaRepair PLUS Face range.
  • 10% urea (face, intensive treatment) — in addition to hydrating, it begins to act keratolytically — loosening the bonds between corneocytes and aiding exfoliation. Used for xeroderma and hyperkeratosis.
  • 10% urea (body) — the standard concentration in body lotions for extremely dry, flaky and rough skin. The UreaRepair PLUS Body range.

Why urea rather than hyaluronic acid? Because urea penetrates the stratum corneum — hyaluronic acid (at standard molecular weight) stays on the surface. For genuinely dry skin with a compromised barrier, urea is the first-choice ingredient. Eucerin understood this decades before the HA craze and has built on it consistently. Aquaphor — 41% petrolatum and (almost) nothing else

Eucerin Aquaphor is a product that breaks modern cosmetic rules — and does so deliberately. The formula is brutally simple:

  • 41% petrolatum (petroleum jelly) — the strongest occlusive available in skincare. It reduces TEWL (transepidermal water loss) by more than 98%.
  • Lanolin — an emollient that mimics skin lipids and supports penetration
  • Panthenol — stimulates regeneration
  • Glycerin — a humectant
  • Bisabolol — soothes irritation

Aquaphor isn't a moisturiser — it's a healing ointment. It's applied to cracked lips, abrasions, burns, post-procedure skin, healing tattoos and nappy rash. Petroleum jelly has the strongest scientific evidence for occlusive efficacy — no "natural" alternative comes close to its effectiveness at preventing water loss.

Yes, petroleum jelly is a product of crude-oil refining. No, that doesn't make it harmful. Pharmaceutical-grade petrolatum undergoes multi-stage refining and is one of the most thoroughly studied ingredients in the history of cosmetics. Aquaphor is proof that Eucerin puts data above marketing.

Licochalcone A — the hidden ace up the sleeve

Less well known but equally important is Licochalcone A — a flavonoid isolated from liquorice root (Glycyrrhiza inflata). Eucerin uses it across many ranges, particularly in products for sensitive skin and in sun care. Its properties:

  • Anti-inflammatory action — it inhibits enzymes responsible for the inflammatory cascade (the NF-κB pathway)
  • Antioxidant protection — it neutralises free radicals generated by UV
  • Mitochondrial protection — Beiersdorf studies have shown that Licochalcone A protects skin-cell mitochondria from oxidative stress

It's an ingredient rarely mentioned on social media, yet it has solid scientific backing. Eucerin doesn't exploit it for marketing the way CeraVe does with ceramides — it simply adds it where it's needed.

The pH5 philosophy — why acidic pH matters

The Eucerin pH5 range rests on a simple but important premise: healthy skin has a natural pH of around 5.0–5.5. Alkaline products (soaps, gels with a pH of 7+) disrupt the acid mantle, which leads to:

  • A weakened skin barrier
  • Greater susceptibility to infection (alkaline pH favours the growth of pathogens)
  • Increased dryness and irritation

Eucerin pH5 is a range of products — from shower gels to lotions — that keep the skin's pH within its optimal range. Buffering ingredients (citric acid, sodium citrate) stabilise the formula. This matters especially during daily washing — every wash temporarily raises the skin's pH, and pH5 products minimise that shift.

Beiersdorf R&D — the backbone you don't see on the packaging

Behind Eucerin stands Beiersdorf's research centre in Hamburg — over 1,000 scientists, one of the largest private cosmetic laboratories in Europe. Beiersdorf publishes dozens of scientific papers a year, holds more than 10,000 patents and runs clinical trials at a level comparable to pharmaceutical companies.

That doesn't mean every Eucerin product is perfect. The brand tends towards conservative formulas — you won't find trendy ingredients like bakuchiol or tranexamic acid here. But what it does offer is tested to a degree smaller brands simply can't afford.

Limitations and criticism

Eucerin isn't without its flaws. Some products contain fragrance (parfum), which is inconsistent with dermocosmetic positioning. The packaging can be impractical. Prices — 40–90 PLN for face creams — are justified by the quality, but not always competitive against CeraVe, which offers a similar philosophy for less.

The bottom line: Eucerin is a brand for people with specific skin concerns — extreme dryness, a damaged barrier, a need for occlusion or pH regulation.
