Aloe in Cosmetics — Juice, Extract or 200:1 Concentrate? How to Tell Marketing from Real Performance

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice isn't the same as Leaf Extract. A 200:1 concentrate sounds impressive but is often a gimmick. Learn about acemannan and what aloe really does.

Aloe appears on the labels of so many cosmetics that you might get the impression it's a cure-all for everything — from sunburn to wrinkles. The reality is more nuanced. The European Commission's CosIng database lists more than a dozen forms of aloe, and the differences between them aren't cosmetic — they're fundamental. Before you reach for a cream "with aloe," it's worth knowing what's actually inside.

Aloe in the INCI — three names, three different ingredients

On a cosmetic's ingredient list you may come across several variants:

  • Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice — fresh juice from the pulp of the aloe leaf. It contains water (98–99%), polysaccharides, enzymes, vitamins and minerals. If it sits at the top of the INCI list, it genuinely forms the base of the product — in place of water.
  • Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract — an extract, meaning a substance drawn from the leaf using a solvent (water, glycol, alcohol). The concentration of active compounds depends on the extraction method and can be many times lower than in the juice.
  • Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Powder — freeze-dried powder from the leaf, reconstituted with water during manufacturing. It allows the concentration to be controlled but loses some of the heat-sensitive enzymes.

The key takeaway: the word "aloe" on the front of the packaging tells you nothing about the form or the concentration. Only the INCI reveals whether you're dealing with juice, an extract or a mere trace in the formula. Check the details in our ingredient encyclopaedia.

Acemannan — the polysaccharide that really matters

Of the hundreds of compounds present in the pulp of Aloe vera, the best-documented biological activity belongs to acemannan (acetylated mannan) — a long-chain polysaccharide with a molecular weight of 20,000–70,000 Da. Research by Chantarawaratit et al. (2014), published in the Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine, showed that acemannan stimulates fibroblast proliferation and increases type I collagen synthesis.

The problem is that acemannan is found mainly in the inner gel (pulp) of a fresh leaf. Processing — high-temperature drying, alcohol extraction, long storage — degrades this polysaccharide. That's why a cosmetic based on juice (Leaf Juice) with gentle heat treatment usually has a higher biological potential than a cosmetic made with an extract (Leaf Extract) produced by stripping the leaf with a hot solvent.

The "200:1" concentrate trap — maths that doesn't add up

Many aloe gel packs carry the slogan "200:1 concentrate" — suggesting that 1 litre of product was made from 200 litres of juice. It sounds impressive, until you check the maths.

Fresh Aloe vera pulp is 98–99% water. If you evaporate 200 ml of juice down to 1 ml, you get a thickened mass — but one still stripped of heat-sensitive enzymes and partially degraded in its polysaccharides. This concentrate is then diluted back with water to the desired gel consistency.

The "200:1" label refers to the concentration ratio of the raw material, not the concentration in the finished product. A gel whose ingredient list reads "Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (200:1 concentrate) — 0.5%" contains fewer active compounds than a gel with "Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice — 95%." It's a classic marketing gimmick, and seeing through it requires knowing how to read the INCI list rather than the slogans on the front of the pack.

The cooling effect — not magic, just physics

Aloe gel produces that distinctive cooling sensation when applied to the skin. Many people attribute this to the plant's "healing properties." In reality the mechanism is mundane: water-based gels (and aloe juice is almost pure water) absorb thermal energy from the skin as they evaporate. It's the same effect you get from a damp compress.

The cooling sensation is real, but it isn't specific to aloe — any water-based gel will cool to a comparable degree. Aloe's therapeutic value lies elsewhere: in stimulating fibroblasts, in its anti-inflammatory action (inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2) and in hydrating the stratum corneum through water-binding polysaccharides.

When aloe genuinely helps — a review of the evidence

A meta-analysis by Maenthaisong et al. (2007) in Burns found that aloe preparations sped up the healing of first- and second-degree burns by an average of 8.8 days compared with conventional treatment. The caveat: the studies covered mainly fresh gel or pharmaceutical preparations with a controlled acemannan concentration, not drugstore cosmetics.

In everyday skincare, aloe proves useful as:

  • A soothing ingredient after sun exposure (but NOT as a substitute for SPF).
  • A hydrating ingredient in lightweight formulas for combination and oily skin.
  • A base for other active ingredients — its gel consistency aids the penetration of niacinamide or hyaluronic acid.

How to choose an aloe cosmetic that actually works

Look for products in which Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice appears in first or second place on the INCI list — before water or directly after it. Avoid formulas in which aloe shows up after the preservatives and fragrance — there it serves a purely marketing function.

Pay attention to the IASC (International Aloe Science Council) certificate — raw-material producers with this certification guarantee a minimum acemannan content and controlled heat treatment.

Fresh pulp from an Aloe vera leaf contains unprocessed polysaccharides and enzymes that partly degrade during cosmetics manufacturing. However, homemade gel has no stabilisers and spoils within 2–3 days. A good compromise is preparations with Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice in first place on the INCI list, pasteurised at low temperature.

It's the concentration ratio of the raw material, not the concentration in the finished product. Aloe juice (98% water) is evaporated down to 1/200 of its volume and then diluted back. A product labelled '200:1 concentrate — 0.5%' contains fewer active compounds than '95% pure juice.' Always check the concentration, not the multiplier.

Not entirely. Aloe gel hydrates by binding water in the stratum corneum, but it contains no occlusive lipids to prevent that water from being lost. For dry skin, aloe gel isn't enough — you need an additional layer of cream with ceramides or oils.

Leaf Juice is the juice pressed directly from the pulp — it retains acemannan and enzymes. Leaf Extract is obtained using a solvent, with a variable and often lower concentration of active compounds. Leaf Juice in first place on the INCI means it forms the base of the product.
