Eco-Friendly Packaging vs. Cosmetic Formula — What Actually Reduces Your Environmental Footprint?

Packaging vs. formula — where does the real impact lie?

In conversations about sustainable cosmetics, consumer attention focuses mainly on packaging — a glass jar instead of a plastic one, a paper label, a recyclable tube. That's understandable: packaging is visible, tangible and easy to judge. Yet product life cycle studies (LCA — Life Cycle Assessment) reveal a more complex picture.

According to industry analyses, packaging accounts for just 5–20% of a cosmetic's total carbon footprint, while the formula (raw-material production, chemical processing), transport and the way the product is used (hot water while washing!) are responsible for the remaining 80–95%. That doesn't mean packaging is irrelevant — but keeping it in perspective helps you make more informed choices.

Glass vs. plastic — not as obvious as it seems

Glass is widely seen as the "eco-friendly" option — it's natural, endlessly recyclable and looks elegant. But a full environmental analysis complicates that picture:

Advantages of glass

  • Infinite recyclability — glass can be melted down again and again without losing quality.
  • Chemical inertness — it doesn't react with the formula and releases no microplastics.
  • UV protection — dark glass shields sensitive ingredients (retinol, vitamin C) from light-induced degradation.

Disadvantages of glass

  • Weight — a glass jar weighs 5–10 times more than its plastic equivalent. Heavier transport means higher CO₂ emissions.
  • Energy-intensive production — glass melts at around 1,500°C, whereas plastic is processed at 150–300°C.
  • Fragility — it requires additional protective packaging (cardboard, fillers), which increases material use.
  • Real-world recycling — although technically 100% recyclable, in practice a large share of cosmetic glass (especially coloured, lacquered or with metal parts) ends up in landfill because recycling facilities won't accept it.

The takeaway: glass isn't automatically better than plastic. A heavy glass container shipped halfway across the world can have a larger carbon footprint than a lightweight PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastic container made locally.

PCR plastic — recycling in practice

PCR plastic (Post-Consumer Recycled) is plastic made from consumer waste — for example, PET bottles collected through curbside recycling. Using PCR reduces the demand for new crude oil and cuts CO₂ emissions by 30–70% compared with virgin plastic.

More and more cosmetic brands now use packaging made of 50–100% PCR. It's worth looking for this label on the packaging or in the brand's messaging. It isn't a perfect solution, though — PCR plastic quality declines with each recycling cycle, and the availability of the raw material can be limited.

Airless pumps — protecting the formula and reducing waste

Airless pump packaging consists of dispensing systems that prevent the formula from coming into contact with air. A piston rises as the container empties, providing:

  • Protection for sensitive ingredients — retinol, vitamin C and acids don't degrade when exposed to oxygen and light.
  • Precise dispensing — less product wasted.
  • Hygiene — no finger contact with the formula reduces the risk of microbial contamination, which allows for fewer preservatives.
  • Minimal residue — the piston pushes out almost all of the product, whereas 10–20% of the formula gets left behind in a jar or tube.

The downside of airless pumps is that they're hard to recycle — they combine plastic, metal and silicone, which makes separating the materials difficult. Some brands, however, offer take-apart systems.

Refills — refilling instead of throwing away

The refill system (replenishing the packaging) is probably the most effective strategy for reducing packaging waste. A permanent container (such as an elegant bottle) is used repeatedly, while the consumer buys only the formula refill in a lightweight pouch or a biodegradable container.

The environmental benefits are clear:

  • A 50–80% reduction in plastic per unit of product.
  • Lower transport weight.
  • A smaller carbon footprint across the entire life cycle.

The barriers remain consumer convenience and refill availability. Not every brand offers a refill system, and not every consumer remembers to buy a refill instead of a brand-new container.

Cosmetic formula and its environmental impact

Packaging is only part of the equation. A cosmetic's ingredients have a direct impact on the natural environment:

  • UV filters — oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3) and octinoxate (Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate) harm coral reefs. Some regions (Hawaii, Palau) have banned their use.
  • Surfactants — biodegradable glucosides have a lower impact on aquatic ecosystems than SLS/SLES.
  • Raw-material production — palm oil (Palmitic Acid, Palm Kernel Oil and their derivatives) is linked to deforestation. The RSPO certificate (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) is the minimum standard of responsibility.

  4. Use less, but better — concentrates and waterless formulas need smaller packaging and less transport.
  5. Recycle responsibly — empty the container, remove pumps and caps, and sort the materials.
