Fear-based marketing

- Offer a "clean" alternative (a pricier product without that ingredient)

SLS/SLES — a bogeyman stripped of context
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are surfactants used in cleansing gels and shampoos. Can SLS irritate the skin? Yes — at high concentrations and with prolonged contact. That's precisely why SLS is used as a positive control in irritation testing. But in rinse-off products (which contact the skin for 30–60 seconds), the risk is minimal for most people.
People with eczema or very sensitive skin may genuinely benefit from gentler surfactants (e.g. Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate). But that's an individual matter, not a reason to eliminate SLS across the board.
The EU already regulates safety — and does it well
In the European Union, cosmetics are governed by Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 — one of the strictest in the world. What does that mean in practice?

See the problem? Excluding "synthetic ingredients" rules out plenty of effective, safe substances. - Avoid the allergens that affect you — this is an individual matter, not a list off the internet
- Don't fear "chemicals" — water is a "chemical." Every ingredient is a chemical substance. What matters is the dose, the concentration, and the context of use
- Look for products with proven effects — niacinamide, retinol, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid have hundreds of clinical studies behind them
