Eyeshadow: mica, talc, carmine — which ingredients are safe for your eyes?

Eyeshadow is one of the oldest cosmetics in history — the ancient Egyptians were applying malachite and galena to their eyelids 4,000 years ago. Modern formulas are far safer, yet the INCI list of an eyeshadow can run to dozens of entries. In this guide we explain what lies behind the most important ingredients and what to watch out for if you have sensitive eyes.

Mica (CI 77019): the foundation of shine

Mica is a potassium aluminium silicate — a mineral with a naturally plate-like structure that reflects light to create a shimmer and satin effect. It is the basis of nearly every eyeshadow with a sheen.

Is mica safe?

From a toxicological standpoint, mica is one of the safest ingredients in colour cosmetics. It does not penetrate the skin, is not metabolised, and shows no allergenic or irritant activity in clinical testing. The CIR (Cosmetic Ingredient Review) confirmed its safety in 2003 (with a re-evaluation in 2015).

The problem with mica is ethical rather than toxicological — a significant share of the world's mica supply comes from India and Madagascar, where child labour in the mines has been documented. Choose brands that commit to the „Responsible Mica Initiative” or use synthetic mica (Fluorphlogopite).

Talc: safe or not?

Talc (Talc, CI 77718) is the softest mineral on the Mohs scale — a hydrated magnesium silicate. It is the base of most pressed eyeshadows, giving them smoothness and adhesion to the skin. The controversy around talc centres on two issues:

Talc and asbestos

In nature, talc deposits can lie next to asbestos (chrysotile) deposits. Historically, there have been cases of cosmetic talc being contaminated with asbestos fibres — the most high-profile being Johnson & Johnson and its baby powder. However:

  • Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 requires cosmetic talc to be asbestos-free
  • Manufacturers use tests (XRD, PLM, TEM) to rule out contamination
  • The IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) classifies asbestos-free talc as „not classifiable as to carcinogenicity” (Group 3) — meaning there is insufficient evidence of carcinogenicity

Talc in eyeshadows from reputable European manufacturers is safe. If you would still rather avoid it, look for formulas based on mica or synthetic fluorphlogopite — search for them on PurScore.

Iron oxides: the colour trio

Iron oxides are the workhorses of colour cosmetics. Three variants deliver a wide range of shades:

Iron oxides are synthesised (not mined), which guarantees purity and consistent colour. They are exceptionally stable, non-penetrating and non-allergenic. They are among the best-tolerated pigments — approved in the EU with no concentration limit in eye products.

Pressed vs. loose: the inhalation question

The difference between pressed and loose eyeshadows is not only about application, but also about safety:

Pressed eyeshadows

The pigments are held together by binders (dimethicone, octyldodecanol, zinc stearate) that keep the particles bound. The risk of inhalation is minimal — the powder does not become airborne during application.

Loose eyeshadows

Loose particles easily become airborne when applied with a brush. The issue mainly concerns mica and talc — their fine fractions (below 10 µm) can reach the lower respiratory tract. Regular inhalation of mineral dust over many years is not harmless to the lungs.

Practical recommendations:

  • Apply loose eyeshadows using a wet technique (a dampened brush) — this dramatically reduces dusting
  • Avoid blowing on the brush to remove excess product
  • People with asthma should choose pressed or cream formulas only

Carmine (CI 75470): an intense red with an ethical issue

Carmine is a natural pigment obtained from the females of the cochineal insect (Dactylopius coccus) — a bug that lives on prickly pear cacti. Producing 1 kg of carmine requires around 70,000 insects. Carmine delivers an intense, stable red that is hard to reproduce synthetically.

Safety

Carmine is safe for most people, but it can trigger allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis in rare cases. People with an insect allergy should avoid it. On the INCI list it appears as Carmine, CI 75470 or sometimes Cochineal Extract.

The vegan question

Carmine is an ingredient of animal origin — eyeshadows labelled vegan cannot contain it. Alternatives include Red 40 (CI 16035, a synthetic azo dye) or Red Iron Oxide (CI 77491). Check the PurScore database to see whether your favourite eyeshadow contains carmine.

What to look out for when buying eyeshadow

  1. Sensitive eyes? — look for talc-free formulas with mica and iron oxides as the base
  2. Vegan? — check for CI 75470 (carmine) on the INCI list

  4. Contact lenses? — avoid heavily glittery formulas with large glitter particles that can damage your lenses
