Let's take a look from the perspective of ingredient analysis.
Three ceramides — the foundation of every CeraVe product
Every CeraVe product — from cleansing gel to moisturising cream — contains the same three ceramides: ceramide NP (ceramide 3), ceramide AP (ceramide 6-II) and ceramide EOP (ceramide 1). This is no random selection. Ceramides make up around 50% of the lipids in the stratum corneum, and these three types are responsible for key functions:
- Ceramide NP — the most abundant ceramide in healthy skin, responsible for maintaining the right level of hydration between corneocytes.
- Ceramide AP — plays a regulatory role in the maturation and shedding of epidermal cells. A deficiency is linked to keratinisation disorders.
- Ceramide EOP — a long-chain ceramide that builds "bridges" between lipid layers. It is crucial for the mechanical cohesion of the barrier.
On top of this come cholesterol and fatty acids — together they form a physiological lipid blend that closely mimics the natural composition of the intercellular cement. This approach is based on the research of Peter Elias and his "skin barrier repair" concept from the 1990s.
MVE technology — what does it really do?
CeraVe stands out thanks to its patented MVE (MultiVesicular Emulsion) technology. In simple terms: active ingredients — including ceramides — are encapsulated in multi-layered lipid spheres that gradually release their contents over 24 hours. Instead of a single "load" sitting on the surface of the skin, the ingredients penetrate gradually.
Is it a revolution? MVE technology has solid foundations — the patent has been published and peer-reviewed. In practice it means that even a basic CeraVe moisturiser works longer than a comparable product without a controlled-release system. That is a real advantage, especially for people with dry skin who don't want to reapply cream several times a day.
Developed with dermatologists — what does that mean?
CeraVe was created in 2005 in collaboration with dermatologists. This is not an empty slogan — the formulas are designed with specific clinical indications in mind: atopic dermatitis, acne, xeroderma. The brand doesn't promise a "wow effect" — it promises to restore the function of the skin barrier, and it delivers on that consistently.

It is precisely this combination — a pharmacy formula, an accessible price and simple recipes — that drives its popularity. CeraVe doesn't compete on luxury, but on cost-effectiveness. For students, people on a tight budget, or anyone who simply wants solid skincare without unnecessary extras, it is often the best option in the face creams category.
When CeraVe is too much — or too little
CeraVe isn't the ideal brand for everyone. It's worth knowing when to look for alternatives:
- Healthy skin with no barrier issues — if your skin isn't dry, isn't prone to irritation and you don't use retinol or acids, a full ceramide formula may be a case of "form over function". Lighter hydration will do.
- Oily, acne-prone skin — some CeraVe products (especially the Moisturizing Cream) can be too occlusive. The niacinamide line works better, but even here it's worth comparing with the competition.
- A need for anti-ageing actives — CeraVe is base-level skincare. Retinol, vitamin C, peptides — you won't find these in most of its products. The brand deliberately stays out of the "active" cosmetics segment.
- Sensitivity to cetearyl alcohol — this is rare, but real. Cetearyl alcohol appears in many CeraVe formulas and causes breakouts in some people.
Does CeraVe deserve its status?
Yes — with caveats. CeraVe is an excellent brand for rebuilding the skin barrier, with a solid scientific foundation and an honest pricing policy. MVE technology is a genuine innovation, not a marketing gimmick. Three ceramides in every product is a deliberate, not accidental, choice.
At the same time, it's not a brand that will solve every skin problem. It won't replace anti-ageing actives, it won't cure severe acne, and it won't transform skin that simply needs something different. CeraVe's popularity is also fuelled in part by TikTok and influencers, which can create unrealistic expectations.
