Alcohols in Cosmetics - the Good and the Bad. How to Tell Them Apart on the INCI List?
Not all alcohols in cosmetics are the same. Learn the difference between alcohol denat and cetyl alcohol, their properties and their effect on skin.
Few cosmetic ingredients stir up as much controversy as alcohol. Social media is full of advice to avoid "alcohol in cosmetics" at all costs. The trouble is that one and the same name covers completely different substances with diametrically different effects. It's time to put these myths to rest once and for all.
Two completely different families of alcohols
In chemistry, an alcohol is any organic compound containing a hydroxyl group (-OH). That's a very broad definition, covering substances ranging from volatile ethanol to solid, waxy fatty alcohols. In cosmetics we can distinguish two main groups:
Simple (short-chain) alcohols - the potentially drying ones
This group includes:
- Alcohol Denat. (INCI: Alcohol Denat.) - denatured ethyl alcohol, the most commonly encountered "bad" alcohol
- Ethanol / Ethyl Alcohol - pure ethyl alcohol
- Isopropyl Alcohol - isopropyl alcohol
These alcohols are volatile - they evaporate quickly from the skin, which can lead to temporary degreasing and drying of the epidermis. However, their impact depends largely on the concentration and the formulation of the product as a whole.
Fatty (long-chain) alcohols - the beneficial ones
This is a completely different class of chemical compounds:
- Cetyl Alcohol - cetyl alcohol (C16)
- Cetearyl Alcohol - a blend of cetyl and stearyl alcohol
- Stearyl Alcohol - stearyl alcohol (C18)
- Behenyl Alcohol - behenyl alcohol (C22)

Alcohol Denat. - is it always bad?
Alcohol Denat. is ethyl alcohol to which denaturing agents have been added (e.g. Denatonium Benzoate) to make it unfit for consumption. In cosmetics it serves several important functions:
- Solvent - helps dissolve active ingredients that are poorly soluble in water
- Carrier - improves the penetration of other ingredients into the skin
- Mattifying agent - by evaporating quickly, it leaves a matte finish
- Consistency regulator - gives products a light, non-sticky texture
In toners, mists and hair products, Alcohol Denat. at a moderate concentration need not be problematic. Concentration is key - if Alcohol Denat. appears near the start of the INCI list (especially in the top 3), it indicates a high concentration that may be drying for dry or sensitive skin.
Cetyl and Cetearyl Alcohol - the skin's underrated allies
Fatty alcohols are among the longest-used and best-studied cosmetic ingredients. Cetyl Alcohol was first isolated from sperm whale oil in the 19th century (today, of course, it is produced synthetically or from palm/coconut oil).
What fatty alcohols do:
- Emollient - they smooth and soften the skin, filling the gaps between corneocytes
- Co-emulsifying - they help stabilise emulsions, working alongside the main emulsifier
- Occlusive - they form a delicate protective layer that limits water loss
- Texture-building - they give creams a smooth, silky consistency

How to assess the alcohols in your cosmetics?
A simple rule: if the alcohol's name on the INCI list is long and contains words such as "cetyl", "cetearyl", "stearyl" or "behenyl" - it's a fatty alcohol and there's no reason to worry. If you see "Alcohol", "Alcohol Denat." or "Ethanol" - pay attention to its position on the INCI list.

When can Alcohol Denat. be a problem?
- With dry, dehydrated or sensitive skin
- When it's in positions 1-3 of the INCI list
- In leave-on products applied to large areas of skin
- When the skin's lipid barrier is damaged
When is Alcohol Denat. acceptable?
- In rinse-off products (shampoos, shower gels)
- At a low concentration (far down the INCI list)
- In products deliberately formulated to mattify oily skin
- As a solvent for active ingredients in serums
